BEV wheels seem to be part of the low wind resistance design. Helps with overall efficiency.

yep its all about rolling resistance and drag reduction - larger wheels that allow more airflow in to the wheel space increases drag and impacts battery life... my egolf has 16" wheels with less open areas to reduce airflow... not that I intend to put larger wheels on it but it would be interesting to see how much difference it would make.

What gets me with this, is why do we need evs to drive this design? It should be standard to increase efficiency across the board. We seem to make a big song and dance about the fuel cars use but if we can make the ICE versions more fuel efficient with the same design tweaks used to extract more range from a battery we absolutely should. It would make the ICE version cheaper to run and help contribute to emissions targets, not as much as changing fuel source but every little helps. It's that mentality that probably needs to shift, just because an ICE vehicle can drive distance and refill in minutes doesn't mean they should just be wasteful with consuming the fuel.

Aerodynamics was very much a thing in the 1980s with the likes of the Audi 100, Ford Sierra, Opel Omega and Subaru XT.

"Create a society that values material things above all else. Strip it of industry. Raise taxes for the poor and reduce them for the rich and for corporations. Prop up failed financial institutions with public money. Ask for more tax, while vastly reducing public services. Put adverts everywhere, regardless of people's ability to afford the things they advertise. Allow the cost of food and housing to eclipse people's ability to pay for them. Light blue touch paper." — Andrew Maxwell

Positive Ecotricity review for the Riddara RD6

One ton payload, three ton towing 7 year unlimited km warranty on battery and vehicle - https://www.geely.nz/riddara-rd6. Open road economy is not great. I wonder if that can be improved with a tray cover.

Maybe ... but it is a ute. It's going to have the aerodynamics of a brick regardless.

gzt: China's electric heavy truck fleet begins to reduce national diesel consumption

https://www.business-standard.com/world-news/china-electric-trucks-diesel-demand-outlook-ev-shift-iea-rystad-sci-125112500784_1.html

Except the quoted article doesn't actually say that...

the linked article says,

"As a result, the impact on fuel markets has started becoming visible. Diesel consumption in China, the world’s second-largest diesel consumer after the US, fell to 3.9 million barrels a day in June 2024, down 11 per cent year-on-year. The US Energy Information Administration attributed this decline partly to the shift toward LNG and electric trucks."

the Actual U.S. Energy Information Administration report,  actually says,

"We attribute the recent decline in diesel consumption to two major factors—slowing economic activity, mostly because of a slowdown in building and housing construction, and the substitution of liquefied natural gas (LNG) for petroleum diesel fuel in heavy-duty trucks."

The US energy report fails to mention electric trucks at all...

the only other actual attribution to lowering diesel consumption in 2024 is from "environmental think-tank Rhodium Group"

I can't belive I have to say this about an American state agency: But don't trust without verifying anything that comes out of an American state agency these days.

The Trump government has been very active in pushing their political agenda and making sure their agenda becomes visible on the state agencies web sites and reports.

Whether or not the agency is producing a biased report isn't really the issue thou,

the report didn't mention EVs causing diesel decline in China, it said the economy and LNG, so why should a media agency put words in their mouths and say they did... - doesn't that make them as bad as Trump's lot..

Longer AP article on the same topic with additional sources. It's possible the article I linked earlier was a less than perfect rewrite of this well written AP article:

https://apnews.com/article/china-truck-lng-ev-diesel-transport-70f3d612de4b45b6f954a7f557f7f741

"In 2020, nearly all new trucks in China ran on diesel. By the first half of 2025, battery-powered trucks accounted for 22% of new heavy truck sales, up from 9.2% in the same period in 2024, according to Commercial Vehicle World, a Beijing-based trucking data provider. The British research firm BMI forecasts electric trucks will reach nearly 46% of new sales this year and 60% next year."

Well the UK has finally announced a EV mileage tax as we have here

https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c8jw9l7gx92o

3p/mile for EV and 1.5p for PHEV.  That compares to our (courtesy of AI :-) )

Metric                               GBP Cost                        NZD Equivalent (Approx.)

Per mile                            £0.03 /mile                   $0.0624 / mile (at $\text{NZD}/\text{GBP} = 2.08$)

Per kilometre                    £0.0186 / km (approx.)$0.0388 / km (at $\text{NZD}/\text{GBP} = 2.08$)

Drivers will pay the charge based on how many miles they drive from April 2028.

Motorists will have their mileage checked annually, typically during their MOT as is already the case, or for new cars, around their first and second registration anniversary, the Treasury said.

Payment will be integrated into the existing Vehicle Excise Duty system that is administrated by DVLA.

Under the measures, an electric car driver clocking up 8,500 miles in the 2028-29 financial year is expected to pay about £255 - about half the cost per mile that petrol and diesel drivers pay in fuel tax.

However, mileage readings will be based on in-vehicle odometers, which the government acknowledges can be subject to tampering, or "clocking". It recognises that the introduction of the tax "may increase the likelihood of motorists choosing to clock their vehicles", and said it was looking at ways to mitigate this.

Detals are scanty but it appears that payments will be annual which might be a sticker shock for some people.
