But if they do it's good some Australian company has a way to deter this activity.

Disappointing: it only glows under UV light. Should be bright yellow and smell like sewage.

Do folks have any thoughts about what they are going to do when their battery warranties expire?

BYD has 8 years or 150K whichever occurs first and they have recently implemented 8 years 250K in Europe.  The mileage distance hardly affects me since I have put on 28K in 3 years on my Atto3. But there are those who have already clocked up 100K in 3 years so they are likely to hit 150K well before 8.

The warranty will expire but the battery is probably likely to continue working. If it fails then hopefully there will be cottage industries out there (as there are now for Tesla batteries) that can replace individual cells rather than have to resort to an entire battery pack replacement.

I'll continue to drive the car the same as I do now.

Just like you said, as time goes on, more independent repair opportunities will exist which will allow individual component replacement instead of replacing an entire pack.

It's no real difference than having an ICE engine out of warranty if something major fails. You wouldn't take it back to a dealer.

I have 107,000km on the Tesla. When I bought it, the full range estimate was 431km. Now, it's 412km. Barely noticeable. Having said that one of the selling points, for me, of the RWD Model 3 is that the batteries are LFP which has the best lifetime. I'm looking to trade it in soon (wife having suggested we try a new strategy of not waiting till the car is worth $200 to the wrecker before replacing it) and I am pretty certain to be choosing the Seal (Premium trim) which is the only one in the price range that actually has more range than the RWD Model 3 - and it's also LFP.

The difference is if your ICE fails you can replace most parts unless the engine block cracks and needs to be replaced when you are likely to replace the entire engine.

The failure of the EV is likely to be the batteries and hopefully there will be independent repairers. Of course on a tangential matter, if the manufacturer decides after the vehicle warranty expires not to stock spare parts or provide firmware updates, then that is going to be issue.

I can see third party "right to repair" being a big area of contention for EV manufacturers,

Particularly as more and more parts of the driving experience become a licensed subscription model, implying that you are not fully in "ownership" of the vehicle...

I dare to suggest that after 8 years and/or over 150k+ kms of travel, the manufacturer has fully met their legal obligation to provide you with goods of acceptable quality and durability, and any future maintenance and repair is on you.

Agreed as far as warranty is concerned, although there should still be an obligation to provide an adequate stock of spare parts for years to come. You wouldn't accept it if Toyota only made spares for the Corolla for 2 years after it was manufactured.

BYD offers 6 years or 150K bumper to bumper, 8 years on the battery or 150K and 8 years complimentary roadside assistance. I guess that is not too bad.

That is my concern with the chinese ones, they have already had massive issues with crap dealership networks in AU leaving people up the creek with no parts and poor service. Them all here being sold thru 3rd parties that are also doing the support for it under the brand of the manufacturer makes me want to avoid them because when they get bored with the brand and move on - you're not getting anything from anywhere.

Although prices in Singapore are HUGELY distorted by the limits on the 10 yr Certificates of Entitlements,  (the current bid price is well north of 100K NZD), (This was due to only 50K new registrations allowed last year)

A second hand BYD with 8 yrs certificate left is going for $130K SGD .....

BYD stepped in to resolve the Aust issues and now runs the servicing there. In NZ BYD is distributed by Ateco https://ateco.co.nz/brand-partners. The same distributor runs Jeep, Ram, Alpha, Fiat, Abarth. That seems safe.

Personally, I think you are running a greater manufacturer risk buying a new Tesla today than with BYD.
