Silly question from a prospective buyer - how is the Y much of an upgrade from the '3? Is it just the extra space?

I wouldn't really class the Y as an upgrade to the 3 but rather, it's the more practical option if you have kids/dogs. For someone like myself who has neither, the Model 3 is the better option for its more nimble sedan aspects. Outside of cargo space, the only true upgrade to the Model Y RWD vs the Model 3 RWD is that the Y comes with the premium audio package whereas the 3 does not - you need to get the Performance for that.

Ah but the Model 3 RWD does get the LED headlights whereas only the model y performance gets them right?

Not as far as I'm aware. Both have the matrix style headlights, although Tesla doesn't yet use the matrix functionality and instead has them mimic traditional lights. Maybe now that the US has made matrix lights legal they'll start properly using them!

Is the audio in the 3 still good if it's not the premium one?

When I had a Model 3 RWD as a loaner for a week it didn't sound as good as my Performance, mostly because it doesn't have a sub, but I wouldn't say it sounded bad. It still sounded better than most other cars I've been in.

I have a Model Y RWD and have rented a Model 3 SR+ for an extended period (about 2 months), so have some reference points for the difference.

For me the lack of cargo space, the way the boot is set up in the Model 3 and the lower seats in the Model 3 was a deal breaker. But that might not be important to you. I don't think there is much of a difference in driving quality between them.

The 3 SR+ didn't have the premium sound system while the Model Y RDW has, but I can't say I notice much of a difference in the sound system coming from the 3 to the Y. But that also might be different for you.

Would recommend you go to Tesla and get a test drive of both, that might make it easier to choose which car is right for you.

Its ok.

No bass on either of them, and from what I have heard if you put a system in them the 12v cant handle it, and the bass causes the camera sensors to freak out anyway.

No bass on either of which? The Model Y RWD has a sub as it has the premium sound system which gives it plenty of bass. The sub doesn't cause any issues with the cameras in my Model 3 with the premium sound system

Silly question from a prospective buyer - how is the Y much of an upgrade from the '3? Is it just the extra space?

If you have kids and/or expect to need to carry lots of stuff (like on holiday) then the Y is a better fit. I was amazed at how well we coped without a roof box (that we used on all previous holidays with an ICE) - despite the sloping rear of the Y, the additional storage spaces in the froot and under-boot make it a very capacious carrier. Being a hatchback it's also far easier to load/access the boot compared to the 3.

The higher seat height may well help for older people as well - the car's ground clearance isn't that much more than the 3, but the seats are on risers. This also means that if you expect to often have older kids/adults in the back, rear leg room is substantially better in the Y - not only longer car, but the higher front seats mean rear passengers can stretch their legs under the front seats (my kids love the amount of space they have).

Roomier cabin, so feels more capacious - that said, given the glass roof this isn't a real issue with the 3 compared to other cars that often have a darker/more enclosed interior.

I think those are the main things - for us it wasn't ever a choice as we had to have the space the Y offered. If we didn't have kids, or if we had the money to buy a second Tesla for my wife (here's looking at you, Lotto!), we'd go with a 3. It's not like the Y handles poorly - I'm used to the slightly hard ride, and it sticks to the road pretty damn well for a high-sh car - but the RWD version isn't the fastest thing on four wheels. Fantastic acceleration from about 40 onwards (to at least 150), but for an EV it's slow off the mark for the first 40. It's decently quick from 0 compared to most ICEs but go with a 3 (even RWD) or wait for the Performance Y if you want more of that kick.

Edit - oh, yep the stereo is very good. The inclusion of the sub definitely makes a substantial difference - though I did find its placement (it's in the very rear on the right, near the deep storage bin) meant it caused the plastic surround on the rear number plate to vibrate. Got rid of most of the vibration with a bit of foam tape but something Tesla could/should sort going forward.

both cars the Sub would be in the boot, it's a pretty long way for sound energy to get to the driver in these set ups

but hey some people need more bass than others, so plenty of bass or no bass is pretty subjective!

Yeah, I adjusted down the bass because it was too boomy for me to begin with. And I probably prefer a more neutral sound anyway.

Not really though, the recommended location for a sub in a car is in the boot, and that's where it's located in nearly every vehicle that has one.

that's because there's nowhere else to put it, not the best place for subbass that the driver can hear at an output that isn't shaking the rear passengers

wherever you put it, there are pros and cons. personally, the best is 2 under the front seats if the sound is for the driver and you want to save the rear passengers. my rear passengers hate the shaking of their internal organs.

I've read on FB that the MY and M3 prices have dropped again; in the case of the MY it's enough to bring the red under the $80k threshold (see my post on the MY thread).

What was the most recent price for the RWD white M3? Edit: looks like a $2k drop, going by an earlier post which says the previous drop brought it down to $73k before rebate.
