Yes, a shame NZ have been caught on the hop, again. Although as I have a spare LR Leaf (2022 NZ new) now is good time to sell.

There are currently 1841 electric vehicles for sale on trademe, including 285 Leafs.  How many would there need to be to be not “on the hop”?

With the cheapest at around $1k, albeit with very limited battery, it’s apparent that anyone wanting to buy an EV can do so

Good luck getting out of the driveway with  $1k Leaf.

Unless you want to live with constant range anxiety, you would need to spend $5k. Ther are 69 Leafs in that category ,  let's see how many are left by Friday

The Leaf, from what I've read, is strictly a city/suburban vehicle due to its range, especially for the early models.

The 63kWh are much more capable .  we could 500km easily  with a midway charge

There has been a bit of a mix up on Leaf's.

Some commenters are specifically discussing sub $5k leaf's. We are now down to Just 36 Nissan leaf's appearing in a $0 - $5k search on trade me.

These will range from cars that are on death's door (feel sorry for people who panic buy a 3 bar leaf), to ones like the one I sold last year, which are fine for trips up to 80km with some mild hypermiling. The combination of low range, and slow fast charging (my leaf would cut out at 85% on 50 kW fast chargers due to I assume slow speed), so can't even do 80km on the second leg of a trip), means they are not great for road trips. But It seems they are all getting snapped up right now (I guess for people who want a cheapish hedge against fuel issues impacting their commute).

40 kWh (start at about $10k) and 62 kWh (start at about $20k) are quite a different kettle of fish. Both have passively cooled batteries, so can do about two big fast charges untill charging slows to a crawl. say 500 & 700 km respectively in a single day before you are best to stop for the night. latter is quite respectable. CHAdeMO fast charge ports are becoming less common, but this can be fixed with a $1500 adaptor.

I've been procrastinating over buying a Leaf for months. Wish I had done it before this all happened! Anyway, like the rest of NZ, I'll try to pick one up this week from a dealer (hopefully).

Budget is probably $10k max. If anyone knows of any good dealers in Auckland please let me know. Not able to go privately as I do need a proper tax invoice.

$10k is an tricky budget for a leaf right now.

The 40 kWh leaf is a huge step up from the 24 & 30 kWh cars

And there is just a single 40 kWh leaf remaining on trademe under $10k, and I assume it is going to be absolutely hammered by prospective buyers.

Not fully sure what the current market for leaf's is like, but preciously I would have advise to spend less than $5k on a 2014+ 24 kWh leaf, with the best SOH you can find or ~$10k on a 40 kWh leaf.

Especially finding one with a battery that still lasts the distance. It's why I eventually decided on a hybrid over a full EV when I replaced my car about 2.5 years ago.

Thanks for the info. I hadn’t actually thought about the kWh. The Leaf would be for my commute which is 50km per day and can be charged overnight. I’m not looking for massive range.  We already have a larger petrol “family” car.

I bought my Leaf from Auckland  City EV, without physically seeing it. They were very good to deal with .

So highly recommended
