gzt: Now would be a good time for PakNSave and supermarkets generally to start providing EV charge discount vouchers instead of petrol.
richms: Problem is they are competing with home charging where most people charge so it will be the same as fuel discounts, people get way more than they can use.

Yes, but a discount voucher it will make me slightly more likely to use it occasionally as a quick top up to fit more into the day than avoid it completely at all costs ; ).

If anyone is looking for a deal: 2026 MG ZS EV ZSEV EV Excite 51kWh | Trade Me Motors

I have just put a deposit down - approx 4 - 6 weeks to delivery.

These demo units apparently landed in 2023, and haven't been used so get the full warranty from now.

The reviews are good, the price is excellent, and they have 10 white and 3 black left as of 9am this morning.

You are buying second hand ones at essentially this proce.

I umm and ahh'd about a 62kw leaf vs this, and basically new, with the LFP chemistry sold me.

CokemonZ:

To add some real world experience.

I own a 2013 24kwh leaf with 4 bars and ~39.5% SoH.

For work I drive from Birkenhead to Mt Wellington and back - so a mix of stop start and motorway (39.8 kms) and it will take approx 35% of my battery one way, so 70% return.

The car also complains at 43% that the battery is low and I need to find a charger. This is a little before I hit the harbor bridge on the way home.

So make sure it will do what you want.

And the range decreases every year.

For now its fine, but starting to feel a little tight.

I sold my leaf at 66% health, so don't have any real world experience of really low health leaf's.

Really impressed that a 39.5% Health leaf is eating up a 40 km round trip without issue. Assume you need to charge to 100% every time?

At 66% health, my low battery warning would come on at something like 23%. Main issues compared to the start of my ownership where: slightly less range, fickle battery charge level monitoring below 20% (Occasionally would start dropping super fast), and degraded fast charge performance (speed was dropping a lot by 50% charge, and by 75% it was down to single digit kW's. At 85% it was so slow the 50 kW chargers would cut out. These this basically made it unworkable for anything long distance, but was a sweet commuter.

Yep - charge to 100% every night.

Only use the granny charger, as even if you go to a rapid charger it starts at 10kwh and rapidly goes down to about 6kwh.

On their website they have quietly increased the price of this deal by $500 vs what is on your trademe link.

https://ebbettpukekohemg.co.nz/zsevxb-1212083-mg-zsev-2026/

This deal has been running since Jan, but in light of the used EV market getting absolutely decimated, it is much more attractive. Cheapest post facelift ZS EV on trademe now is asking $25k (it's a 2023 with 80,000km). I get that these cars are also 2013 builds, but having a 2026 first registration date means you pick up a lot more warranty, and better resale. In my eyes, absolutely worth the extra $5500, to get the new version.

https://www.cheapies.nz/node/54558

I think I would take this over a 2019 Nissan leaf e+ for similar money. Yeah it is a bit down on power and range vs the Nissan, but having a CCS2 port will make public charging easier if you ever take the car on a trip.

For those interested, note these are run out cars. MGS5 is the new model in that segment in MG's lineup. From $45k.

Dongfeng Box is the other cheap new EV to consider at $27k, but I feel the MG ZS EV is easily worth the extra money.

Given that home charging is so cheap, they'd have to literally pay me (not just give a discount) for the inconvenience of having to sit somewhere to use a fast charger instead ... so I can't see that really happening.

How can you sell it as a 2026 when it arrived in 2023?

Is it a time machine?

Assuming the Iran situation doesn't clear up soon, you are likely to get your asking price too. That 4 - 6 week waiting period for a new car is not acceptable to some buyers (and some just won't have cottoned on there being discounted new car's available).

That waiting period seems strangely long given the cars are in NZ at the moment.

I thought the user on here asking $30k for a 62 kWh leaf was being way too ambitious, but they seemed to sell it quickly.

In NZ car "Years" are the date of first registration (anywhere in the world).

So, yes, one can build a car in 2023, have it sit on a storage or dealership lot for three years, before it gets sold as a 2026 car, as long as the first registration date is in 2026.

Auto industry in this part of the world has done some clever thinking on this one. Works differently in the USA (but they use "model years", where manufactures start building 2027 cars in the middle of 2026)

So far, interest has been a lot slower than I thought it might be under the circumstances. But I don't need to get rid of it until the new Seal is about to arrive, which won't be till May-June, assuming there are not delays in that caused by this whole mess. So, I'm happy to remain patient for the time being.

Unless the charge station is in the PnS parking lot ... charge while shopping.  That could have a lot of appeal to many - depending upon how you get your power at home, e.g. if you have to pay regular electricity costs at home, if if you're on solar, but with only a slow/trickle charger, or if you have a good feed in tarrif - so there is opporutnity cost associated with putting solar energy into the car battery - all these aspects could determine whether using a discounted fast charger in the supermarket parking lot is appealing or not

Nissan was doing the same with their 'new' Leafs back in 2014. Price was dropped from ~$70k to $40K for a new Leaf that was in reality unsold Australian stock that was actually 2 or 3 years old.

Early adopters of electric vehicles are likely to be mostly people who can charge at home, but we are likely to see an increasing number of people dependant on public charging now that the technology has matured and got cheaper. I think access to affordable public chargers is going to be a key component to increasing uptake from this point.

That could make sense, but unlike petrol where it only takes a few minutes to fill so you can get a code at the checkout and use it immediately, it'd probably be the case you would have to use the code next time you went.

If I'm doing a shop in Warkworth I go to the Woolworths which has 2x 7kW chargers, which are free to use. As long as I'm there for at least half an hour I go home with as much charge as I started.

I agree with all of the above. The black is $500 more expensive than the white for no reason when I asked - so white it is for me :)

I will regularly go to Whangamata, and Tinopai, so no worries about range for me.

Didn't even think about the CCS2 port - that is a 100% bonus.

The second hand market is bonkers right now, great time to sell if you have something on the way!

But yeah - we started looking in early feb - wish I'd been a bit more trigger happy, could have got some better secondhand deals. But anyway - this one will be good.
