I'm seriously looking at going for a new Model 3 or Model Y...

@Mehrts: If you can’t find someone here on GZ in PN with an M3, I know a few via the PN EV FB group who’d most likely be willing to demo their car. Let me know if you’d like me to contact them.

I’ve got an MY, so happy to be involved if you want to do a direct side-by-side comparison at the time. But, yep, there’s quite a difference in interior space - both head space (which doesn’t concern me!) and also rear leg room (as the MY front seats are just M3 seats on risers, as you’ll know there’s the ability for rear passengers to stretch out under the seats). Obviously, if driving performance is more important, then there’s no contest as to which I’d choose (but fitting the family and their crap is always going to trump that for us!)

@jonathan18 thanks for that, I'll let you know whether I'll take up your offer 😊
I had no issues at all with the MY, it seems to be overall more practical than the M3, but I do prefer the shape of the M3.

No problems - just DM me if you’d like me to follow up with the FB group members.

Agree re looks - just saying to my work colleagues at morning tea that personally I think the Y is a fairly ugly beast and the 3 beats it hands down. (I think whoever described it as the progeny of a relationship between a 3 and an X was pretty accurate.)

The 3 has grown on me. I used to think it looked like the product between a night of consenting passion between an Aston Martin and a Ford Mondeo but having seen it next to the Model Y, I've got a new appreciation for it.

@Mehrts I'm not Palmy based, but Paraparaumu but you're more than welcome to check out my M3 - it is a Long Range version.

You can also book a test drive via Tesla Wellington too.

@michaelmurfy thanks for the offer. I thought I'd ask around locally before making a trip down to Wellington. Although that might be an excuse for a road trip!

I also clocked up a year at the beginning of March. I've done ... a bit more driving than you. :-D What I have personally appreciated coming from a Leaf which can drop 0.5% in a month is that when I got it the computer calculated full range was 431km. 38,000km and 12 months later, it's 427km.

yes i've learnt to never check the Leaf's SOH after buying. check to buy then never look again. if only it is that easy to check SOH in other BEVs and HEVs.

I'm 12mo and 30,000km in my LR. You win but I think I am up there!

My Long Range Performance (a cross between the Long Range and Performance) is 3 years 3 months now at 72,660. It remains to be seen if the warranty will run out by time or by km's at this stage! I'm guessing km's...

So we have been waiting for our car to die before getting a Tesla and today might be its funeral day. Once it gets towed to the mechanic to see if its repairable. If its not we have $50K+ cash for a second hand Tesla, or a new BYD.

What would you guys do? BYD or Tesla?

We want to keep it 10 years or more. There seem to be a lot of M3s on trademe selling privately. How responsive would sellers be to dropping their asking prices to our level? Is it a buyers or sellers market for them?

Have a look at the Tesla existing inventory as well. I would get a Tesla. But if you want a SUV/cross over SUV for your budget then the BYD Atto 3 is probably the way to go.

We took a BYD for a test drive last weekend, and it sure does have a lot going for it. Drives well, good amount of space for driver/passengers (though boot fairly small, if that matters). That said, apart from the interior which I hoped to find less ugly than in photos, the other aspect I don’t think I could get used to is the interface - both the screen setup and the medley of confusing buttons on the steering wheel…  After getting used to driving my Tesla, my wife said she’d not choose to buy the Atto for these same reasons. (A pity, as the new smaller BYD which has a more conservative interior seems to have the same interface.)

So my recommendation is to have a good drive of both before making any decision - you may find that sways you one way or other.

On the topic of existing inventory, it looks like Tesla has a deal going on at the moment until the 31st where if you buy a vehicle from their used inventory, you get 5000km of Supercharger credit for one year

Used Model 3s are only about $5K off when you figure in the CCD. Why would you?

I can see some in the used inventory for $44k, which includes Enhanced Autopilot (worth $5700).
