Batman:

when did the LFP battery get put in the Model 3?

The LFP battery was probably the determining factor in me going for the M3 over the Polestar 2.

Go Rentals have Model 3s for hire at Dunedin airport ($260/day) which may be a solution if you can’t get to a test drive location, or find a kindly owner on FB.

I just paid a deposit today and they contacted me to say my order can be picked up next week.I have a few questions regarding this.

1) why are they charging a delivery fee ,when I am picking up the vehicle?

2)Why have they not incliuded my trade in vehicle in their calculations on the invoice?

3)They have asked for payment 2 working days prior to pickup. If I pick up the model 3 on tuesday this doesn't allow enough time for payment!

I tried their 0800 number and no one is answering.

Not off to a very good start

Yeah my experience wasn't 100 either.

They were supposed to give me a trade in value in Dec, still didn't have one by Feb. wife gave me the go to order a M3. Put down $400. Finally come back $8k under the lowest Nissan dealer trade in price.

I argued, got no reply. Cancelled my order. Lost $400. Got a 2023 VRX Outlander 3 weeks later.

😔 sigh.

It would seem that your order was already in inventory, probably one someone else cancelled at the last minute. Hence the short timeframe.

  1. Tesla are pretty cunning. You don’t pay a “deposit”, you pay a (non refundable) “order fee”. The “delivery fee” is getting your car from the factory to where you pick it up I believe and is what other dealers have hidden in “on road costs”. No doubt you noticed when you ordered, that the running total at the bottom of the page had all the additional fees added.
  2. My trade in was certainly included in the invoice “balance to be paid” but my process was conducted over weeks, not days. It took them about 3 days to get back to me with a trade in offer after I posted the pictures.
  3. I assume they won’t let you drive away in the car until they have your money. From memory my Tesla account showed as paid within 2 working days of me transferring the funds.

Depending on what time you tried to contact them on the Thursday before Easter, they may have all gone home.

I guess the haste has caught the system out. You could look at it as being lucky you haven’t had to wait 9 months, as was the case not that long ago.

As someone that is very closely looking into the purchase of (most likely) a M3, @Dinga96 did you have to pay more on top of the price that's shown at the bottom of the order screen when you made the purchase? For said delivery fee etc.

I won't be trading in my current vehicle, so that simplifies things a little.

That price at the bottom is reflective of what you’ll pay, ie it includes any additional cost for colour choice, wheels and interior, as well as the delivery and order fees.

It doesn’t include the cost of the mobile charger, if you add that. (When they started charging for that, if it had been included in the original invoice it would have pushed the cost of some Ys over the $80k threshold. Not such an issue now.)

@jonathan18 cheers for that info. It's all these little details that you only discover once going through with an order.

Would be nice if the mobile charger was included, but I guess not everyone needs/wants one. I see the Gen 3 wall charger is only a couple of hundred more than the mobile one.

I would recommend having a mobile charger still - they do come in handy on road trips. I rarely use the Type 2 cable though. Have a look on the “Tesla Owners Buy Sell” group on Facebook where they normally have quite a few for sale.

@michaelmurfy yea I remember you mentioned about that group the other day. Just joined now.

I was wondering how often you'd need the type 2 cable as I prompty discovered in Hanmer Springs, not all chargers have cables. Not much point in getting one if it'll very rarely be used.

With a longer range vehicle you can make do without. But if you’re travelling to Hamner or a place where a Type 2 cable is required you’re welcome to borrow mine if you’re passing through - if you find you’re wanting one then just do it and keep it in your boot compartment.

I also keep a 5M heavy duty extension lead in the car as it comes handy when staying with family.

Tesla previously did include the mobile charger with the cost of the car, but then started removing it world-wide; in NZ this occurred about June-July last year, as I remember earlier orders of the Y (including mine) came with it, and many purchasers were whinging a month or so later.

I’d have bought one anyway, as I’m still charging solely using mine - and I take it on road trips if there’ll be opportunities to charge overnight, eg family or friends’ places (it really reduced our need to use fast chargers on a long SI holiday - even if only 15 km an hour, that’s over 200km of range if charging from 7pm-9am say.)

It seems like many people on the NZ Tesla FB pages don’t recommend getting a T2>T2 cable, but I’m still pleased I’ve bought one - we used it a few times when on holiday at places like The Warehouse, plus it provides peace of mind that one has all bases covered. (Plus could we not expect more ‘fast’ AC chargers to be BYOC, given this is now part of the standards?) Edit: similar to Michael’s offer, happy to lend you our T2 cable if you ever need one for a trip, noting we live in the same city.

Thanks DingBatt that reply was helpful.

Like you say this may be a car someone cancelled.

I am hoping not because of some defect ,like misaligned panels.

Unable to get finance is a biggie at the moment for all car dealers with the general pesimism about peoples ability to afford things in the future.

More likely to be that someone had a change of heart, finance fell through (as mentioned above) or similar.

I know personally, I was willing to lose the $400 order fee if I decided not to go ahead with the Model 3 once I ordered it. Not so much with the Polestar 2, which required a $5000 deposit. I made sure that would be fully refundable. Polestar NZ was happy to do that because it was the first shipment and they already had people waitlisted.

At least you don’t have time for buyer’s remorse!

This doesn't really happen these days so don't worry.
