joker97: these happen a lot and i don't recommend people taking keys, just like i don't recommend people taking keys just because someone's half parked on the road with solid white line [not broken yellow] obstructing you driving at 100 round a bend. yes, it's a stupid place to park but ... these were things i encountered myself: let's see

- old people driving at 20kph in 50 zone
- old people driving at 60-70 in 100 zone
- a BMW M3 parked on a yellow line in town
- a Porsche GT3 parked with half its car outside of the 5 min park box
- drunk students on the road at night
- someone stopping on the road for no apparent reason [usually non local, or old people]
- skateboarder on the road
- old people double parked because they thought that was a park space, obstructing the road
- cyclists biking 4 abreast
- pedestrian happily walking in front of ypu to cross the road making you stop for them
- truck cutting in front of pedestrian crossing when the green man is still solid
- idiot overtaking and then cutting in forcing overtaken car to perform emergency brake
- etc

Heh..

OK so you don't like... (in order)

- old people. ( really don't like those - how old?)
- people with expensive cars.
- someone
- cyclists
- pedestrian
- truck
- idiot
- etc.

I had an idiot truck driver who was parked open his door and jump out of the truck infront of me on a narrow road. ABS got a bit of a test there.

At what point do the people taking the keys start being charged? I wonder if this might start happening, like you say, it's getting a bit out of hand, particularly in a country where tourism is big.

This guy who took the keys should've been charged, at a mininum just pour encourager les autres.

agree. but it appears the rural people won't be party to this. might as well just ask all the tourists not to come here, go to australia instead.

It's almost like a copycat game.

Looking at the article, it says "The Otago Peninsula resident saw a rental car parked in the middle of the southbound lane of Highcliff Rd on Saturday afternoon.". I assume that the picture associated with the article was taken from Mr Penman's car dashcam and is supposed to illustrate the problem.

Except that it pretty much contradicts his story. I see the rental car parked as far to the left as possible, admittedly still blocking half of one lane, there being no hard shoulder. It also appears that there is sufficient clear road ahead of the parked car to be able to overtake it, albeit with some care required. And it appears that Mr Penfold's car is further to the right than the tourist's car. From this picture, I'd say that *Penfold* was the cause of the backup of 8 cars. He's engineered this situation so that he can display his "righteous indignation" and "moral uprightness" and throw his weight around as a tourist vigilante aka bully.

I think that its outrageous that when the tourists pulled off the road to allow the backlog to pass, they were then blocked in by Penfold. They've done their best to get out of his way and let him pass, and he's used that as an opportunity to harass them further, and steal their car keys.

I wonder if he would treat New Zealanders this way? Or white people?

I agree... Penfold should be charged with theft, illegal detention, and inconsiderate driving.

I actually drove round Otago Peninsular on the same day as this particular knuckle dragger. Yes, there are tourists everywhere (wow - who would have guessed?) and they are stopping taking photos, sometimes in unhelpful places (again..who knew?)

However, I have lost count of the number of home-grown tards who park blocking sight lines, stop on blind bends so little Johnny can wee on the car door or whatever. I see it almost every trip I make.

It seems to me that this particular 'concerned Kiwi' has at the very least committed an offence (take your pick from unlawful detention, battery, threatening behaviour - possibly even theft) and as said previously, roundly deserves to be prosecuted as an example. Personally I would give him a week in the stocks on the main drag in Portobello.

Agree that this oaf should be made a lesson of.

The still I saw on an article shows a car totally legally parked, plenty of space to go around it and no reason to be a knob and stop traffic holding up other people by stopping in the road where he did to go and verbally assult the tourists.

I live in Oamaru, near Moeraki, where a little girl died in a collision caused by a foreign driver. A very tragic accident and I can't imagine the pain the family of the little girl must be in. Since that day people living here are signing a petition for a foreign drivers test like nowhere else. The local paper has posted several messages on Facebook to let people know to come by their office to sign. People opened FB groups on this issue and so on.

Most of these people probably buying into the tourist boogeyman stories the press keeps cooking up, like it is the problem of the century, when actually it is not much different than the past years. One of the comments made here about Otago and tourists causing somewhat 90% of the crashes is a perfect example of people making up their own numbers and scaring themselves into hyperventilation.

People seem to be focused on Asian drivers. The PDF from transport.govt.nz shows it's Australian, UK and German drivers causing most accidents. Two countries listed here who drive on the same side as people in NZ. All three countries have road rules and codes of their own.

There was an article about a German who blew a stop sign. Germany has pretty much the same sign and the same rules for it. My guess is he was an inexperienced driver who got cocky. A tourist driving test would have done nothing to prevent this tragic accident.

Here is a statement of somewhat of an incident I just read on Facebook. Please pay attention to the last two sentences. Very inappropriate! Again against Asian people.

omg , coming in from Ngapara today I came up behind a nice new wee station wagon thing and it was driving straddling the road. It would go back from side to side and stay fine for a minute and then do it again. two cars passed it but I wasn't game.Then we came to a blind corner this side of enfield, where the dr lives. around came a truck and a car and I don't know yet how there wasn't a four car pile up I was to busy trying to get over to the side to see whos truck it was , but I bet he was shaking .SOOO close.
The next corner he cut and carried on the same until he pulled up and stopped dead outside the Weston church. I thought to myself that god wont save you if I get out of this car and have a talk to you. Thought better of it and carried on. First person I have ever reported. Its is not going to cost much for the rental companies to fix this problem.Just put a big sign front and back of there cars ,saying. I AM AN ASIAN and then if we all drive as far left as we can we might avoid them.

anyway, way back i mentioned that's how they drive in some places. i don't condone it over here, but that's the reality of some other places, their normal. not an extreme, but their normal, everyday roads
