I feel stupid for having not suggested a Nissan GTR earlier :)

If your wife complains about performance again after that, I'll be exceptionally surprised :)

I was actually at the world first time unveiling of that vehicle prior to it's public unveiling, once when in Tokyo. Walked into the room by accident and was invited to stay. Got to sit in it and start it and everything. Was one of the highlights of my trip goes without saying :)

Unfortunately because of my stupid illness the car has to be OK for me to enter and exit and to get the chair in somewhere which thankfully or regretfully ruled out the McLaren and a few others. I would love to have a car with the Kiwi on it. I think it rules out the GTR.

To each his own - it depends what you're after in a car as always - but to put a Civic R (even the Mugen RR) in the same category as an RS4 or AMG vehicle doesn't make any sense to me. The Civic has a tacky interior, few luxury features, and while it's moderately quick, it's no moreso than any other random performance car from the Japanese manufacturers, and slower than any of the other flagship performance products (GTR, Evo, STi etc). They're one of the better FWD performance cars, sure, but that's not really saying much. The current-gen V6 Accord makes significantly more power and torque, in a more daily-usable way, than the Civic R or Mugen RR, while being only marginally slower yet offering far better (relative) levels of comfort and features, for example. I've driven plenty of Civic Type Rs, not a Mugen RR of course, but then they are only a marginal uplift in spec.

For one of your specific comparisons, a similar-age RS4. As best I can find, the official figures for the Mugen RR put it at 180kw/218Nm and a 0-100kmh of ~6.5seconds. The B7 RS4 makes 309kw/430Nm, does - 100kmh in ~5seconds, and puts it's power down through all four wheels, not just the front two.

For me, unless you're looking specifically for a track car that you're allowed to drive on the road (which, lets face it, was really the aim of the Mugen RR), I'd be putting my $55k elsewhere...

I understand where you're coming from. Any Type R is not similar really to the OP's wants, but it's an option. A different option. Particularly for track days if that's where his wife will drive it. And it's about as different as an RS/AMG, STi/Evo as they get. That's kind of the point. As mentioned before, the age of petroleum is passing by, and everything is going turbo to meet emissions (even the new Civic TypeR which is blasphemy). Pretty much anyone can put a turbo on something and make it quick. I drove an RS4 around Pukekohe and it was brutally quick in a straight line, but suffered from understeer, which seems to be a 4WD trait, either that or the weight. That and the fact it cooked it's brakes.

Of course it's no contest when it comes to equipment. I don't know what the RS4 is new, but the Civic is, well, a Civic. Albeit a very quick one, especially around a track. It's never going to win any quarter mile or 0-100 comparisons, FWD cars simply can't. But it's unique.

However I think the OP has already highlighted the best vehicle. The Mustang. It looks cool, I'm not sure what it's like inside or to drive, but since every M or RS car is now available in auto it will at least look unique.

ANCAP (OZ) rating is derived from the Euro NCAP testing, they didn't do their own testing. The below par front seat airbag performance would be of greatest concern to me if I was a Mustang owner. The rear seat figures not so much as anyone who buys one as a family car has rocks in their head. By my reckoning, the rear seats should be classed as "rear seat/parcel shelf".

What I found the most interesting (disturbing) was that the Mustang got a 5 star (US) NCAP rating.

This is going to be loooooooooooooong haul. Luckily it's not urgent and she wants to make the right decision. I have suggested that maybe she should wait a few months until we can see and test the 2017/18 models of the various marques that interest her.

BMW M140? They're about $80k new. 250kW, must be around 1500kg. That sounds like a brutally quick car to me. Actually I'm not sure if I could think of a car that would keep up, Evo, WRX?

Edit. 5 star ANCAP, normal back seat. I'd put up with the indicator stalks on the wrong side for that.

I am not sure it's been talked about yet, but have you tried Subaru's Levorg? (Legacy GT Spec Twin Turbo). Pretty good handling, practical, well spec'd and pretty well priced.

Hmm considered a Telsa? We are running out of options pretty quickly. Mercedes Hot hatches are nice cars. Blanket ban on Subaru and all Euro's are going to limit her choices severely. Considering what she gains in a euro, indicators seem a small price to pay, but I guess at the end of the day she will have to choose from those remaining choices.
