Don’t hold your breath.

Interesting there isn’t a MYLR on offer in NZ. I wonder if it’s because of the long wait times in other parts of the world, or maybe the $80K rebate limit meaning a lack of demand? Certainly, I don’t know if the MY would have been just under $80K if the limit wasn’t there. So that is the one positive for limit.

The MYP at $NZ109K May appeal to some people.

I wonder if the MYRWD has a 1500kg tow rating in NZ?

The NZHerald has news of the availability, so maybe one of their reporters got the email, or there’s been a press release.

I just don't think the demand for the Long Range is really there due to the rebate cap. Most people ordering who aren't order a Model 3 RWD are ordering the Performance and I suspect the same will be true for the Y as well.

HarmLessSolutions: Previously Tesla offered a towbar on the Model Y but that seems to have disappeared now.

Given that my ICE car which I'll be getting rid of when the Y arrives and that our other car is a Leaf, I ultimately do want/need a towbar on the Y. So I was pleased to have read this in the Stuff article on the Y's NZ release:

Tesla will offer a tow-bar as an optional service-installed accessory, but says it won’t be available until ‘early 2023’ at this stage. The Model Y will be capable of towing 1600kg on a braked trailer or 750kg unbraked.

I wonder how good the towing on the single motor. The acceleration of the cheapest model is not great relative to the dual motor versions

And yet this “entry level” Tesla still has more power and better acceleration than competitors like the EV6, Ioniq 5, Enyaq…?! I’ve driven a M3 RWD (so very similar to the MY) and the more powerful of the RWD Ioniq 5s, and there’s no comparison, yet that Hyundai wasn’t even under the threshold. Go figure…

Lol, while the acceleration of the the single motor (0-100 in 6.9 sec) is not as good as the dual motor, performance (0-100 in 3.7s), both car's are considered to be fast and powerful.

Tesla hasn't published kW ratings for the base trim, but I assume it is the same 239kW unit as in the model 3 SR+. Plenty for a 1500kg or so trailer.

For comparison the current 2.8Diesel hilux makes 150kW (and has a 3.5T tow rating).

Safe to say power is not going to be an issue with towing with a Tesla (or most EV's for that matter).

Big issues for towing with an EV are:

  • Power consumption - towing something draggy like a caravan is going cut range in half or perhaps even to 1/3rd of normal. More efficient EV's with smaller batteries will be worse impacted than less efficient one's.
  • Cooling - Basically when towing something big 2 - 3 times the normal amount of heat needs to be removed from the power-train, cooling system will need to work really well to keep everything cool. Fast charging will be required 2 - 3 time more frequently etc.

And of course the Non EV issue, of how the car dynamically responds to the forces from the trailer (especially cira 100kg of down-force).

The Y is still a “use the courtesy trailer from Bunnings” type of vehicle, rather than a “Tow the boat to the Coromandel” one. I am interested to know if the service installation that Stuff referred to means it has been pre-wired and has the ability to have “tow mode” activated in the software? That is the case with both the 3 and the Y in the UK I believe. The Y there even has a hatch in its bodywork to take a towbar.

While the power/torque ratings may appeal to some of the kW-heads (EV equivalent of a Petrol-Head 😁) it kind of misses the point of driving an energy efficient car. It’s fun to occasionally to plant your foot, I get that, but I started competing with myself when I had my Camry hybrid to see how efficiently I could drive. That has carried through to my Tesla. Not ridiculously hyper-miling or drafting behind LGVs, just trying to drive efficiently. The efficiency is part of the reason I chose the Model 3 over the Polestar 2.

In the same realm, the Model Y, particularly in its single motor RWD guise, will be an efficient family wagon. It’s going to sit at about 6.5km/kWh if driven properly (my M3 is averaging 7.4 since new and improving). This is because it is slightly heavier and slightly less aerodynamic than the M3 but still well ahead of its competitors (Ioniq5 and EV6 particularly).

For those that have got one coming, is the UMC (granny charger) included or do you need to order that separately? Tesla has stopped supplying them in the US, I just wondered if it was the same here yet?

The first accessory I would be getting for the Y is a cargo cover.

I’d be interested to know the stats on the M3LR vs the M3P numbers since the rebate started because there is still a $14K (?) price difference. For an everyday driver you’re essentially paying that for bragging rights of owning a Performance. I think it has more to do with demand for the MYLR in other RHD markets outstripping supply though.

Yet another example of why the rebate limit should be $100K.

I think your top comment is a bit wide of the mark. The model Y is rated for 1600kg (1580kg?) of towing, and as long as range can be managed, should do comparably to non electric soft SUV's with similar tow ratings (rav4 etc).

Aspects of the model Y like the 2wd version being RWD, and relitively heavy weight are both good for towing.

Corromandal is sub 200km from Auckland / wellington, so providing it isn't a day trip (and the car can be charged overnight), range should be workable with either no charge stops, or potentially a single quick one.

Obviously the 1600kg weight limit, restricts the size of the boat. (Most NZ boat's sitting on a single axle trailer should be fine, trailer boats with cira 115hp engines etc).

Here is an example of a youtuber doing a 158km trip to a lake with a 1361kg boat & trailer:

https://insideevs.com/news/510556/tesla-model-y-towing-boat/

Range was just 45% of normal, but the trip went fine.

On the UMC, good bet it is not included (Pressure to get the price under the rebate cap, and it being dropped in overseas markets), but I am just guessing.

On the Cargo cover, I believe that is now included on the China built Model Y's.

Note it is a board that kinda folds and slides forward, rather than the roller type see on USA model Y's.

I was hoping that would be the case, having read of this for the HK market (even though Tesla's take on a cover is pretty crap compared to the one in my own car), but going by what I've seen in videos/photos of the demo cars in NZ/Aus, it doesn't look like they include one for our cars, eg see this bit of a video from a car in Sydney: https://youtube.com/clip/UgkxlFeLvRCgpT6vCXDtDWrtdqzLSd6axWPL

Looks like I'll have to go for an after-market version - the idea of a car with an all-glass roof not having a way to shield items in the back is not terribly practical!

I've got a fairly long list of accessories to buy already but will focus initially on the 'need to haves' like a screen protector, tyre inflator/repair kit, sunshade for the roof (we've got a 16-day SI trip at Xmas time, so may well have the Tesla by then), windscreen shade, mats for boot/under-boot/froot... Tessories and Amazon AU - places where I imagine order times won't be too bad - currently have little MY-specific equipment, but imagine this will start to change pretty quickly.

While you're talking about M3s, in relation to MYs: while this may not reflect the breakdown of all orders to date, the MY NZ FB group I have (or my fake avatar has!) just joined has a survey; at this point with 71 responses, only 4% are Performance models.

Interestingly, many are electing to take advantage of coloured models costing under the rebate threshold, but if this is a wider trend it looks like a good proportion will be the same blue I've ordered. (No surprise that no-one's ordered the red RWD version!)
