Because it's easy.

Wellington motorway, four lanes the split two on the left to SH1 and two on the right to SH2.

I was on the first lane (way behind so not even in the picture), Green Car on the second lane, both of us getting on SH1. Blue Car on third lane with Red Car behind it on same lane, getting on SH2. 

Because Red Car is a muppet he is driving way past 100 km/h (we're doing 100 km/h and he went flying past). Instead of changing from the third lane to the second lane (and to the first lane since he wanted to go past Green Car, Red Car decided to accelerate more, overtake Blue Car then cross three lanes in one single change, going in front Green Car at the last second before the motorway actually splits with a big barrier in front of him.

Yep see that heaps of times on motorways. Travelling along in the inside lane doing legal speed and you see an idiot zooming up behind you in your lane and the idiot pulls out into the middle or outside lane and zooms past you and then pulls left across all lanes right in front of you to take the exit. DOH. You usually have to brake.  He may have saved 10 seconds, if that, in his journey.

Happens all the time on Auckland motorways, almost a daily occurrence.

My Tesla Model 3 was almost certainly written off yesterday by a speeding driver off his face on P. 

I was crossing the one-lane bridge over the Whangaparoa River at Cape Runaway on the East Cape.....and the guy roared onto the bridge without checking....and then didn't stop. He just smashed past me. We weren't injured at all.....it was a glancing hit.....but the side of the car was crumpled / shredded like tin foil. 

I managed to just get my car off the bridge despite some serious damage to me rear left wheel. I looked back and saw the guy running away down the highway. A while later, after calling the AA with help from a local, we saw a bus go by and the owner of the bus in hot pursuit. The guy who hit my car had gone onto a nearby property and stolen an old bus the owner had been working on. So several vehicles chased the bus down the highway and the theif then drove it off the road into a paddock and it got stuck. He ran off, but they chased him down and caught him. He was then arrested and taken away. 

But my car is stuffed, I think. It's only 4 months old.

What a muppet. Hope he gets put in jail for a while for all his shenanigans. 

Good to hear you are all ok, but sucks about the car. I would also think its a write off.

Coming up to a notorious bad stop sign at chc airport.

I note a camper van try to use the right lane as a turning spot.. errrr. WT?!?

Then heavens forbid.. the 2nd one in the convoy pulled up behind them to do the same thing!!!

Knowing stuff could go south bad, and I'd be in the middle of it if I was at the line, I hauled up and snapped this

Sent off to the rental company. Funny enough no reply.

They were either fresh off a plane, or looking where to drop them off before getting on one and realised heading south wasn't the way

Would make more sense if my camera hadn't fallen off the window in the 32deg days recently. But you would like to think even non NZ drivers would know not to do this on a busy road and actually use a damn side street

Would make more sense if my camera hadn't fallen off the window in the 32deg days recently. But you would like to think even non NZ drivers would know not to do this on a busy road and actually use a damn side street

 

 

 

Especially when you're in a foreign country or an area you're not familiar with, you need to suck it up if you find yourself in the wrong lane for where you wish to be and just go with the flow,  find a suitable place to stop then regroup your thoughts. Granted a big camper van makes  finding such a place a bit more difficult.  However a lot of airports have a shopping centre nearby where there is usually plenty  of space to park and manoeuvre.

I (skim) read the full story on the YouTube video. Sounded like a really crazy ordeal, and I can only imagine the feeling watching a car come full speed towards you with nowhere to go. Looks like the car may have met its end, but glad you are all OK.

This has reminded me to follow up with police about a blue Mitsi Colt in Te Rapa -> Ngaruawahia that was driven by a guy obviously high on drugs (could see him in the rearview visibly agitated and baked), overtaking multiple times in dangerous places and tailgating cars like crazy. Called *555 and told the call-taker that he needed to be stopped now, but didn't seem like they got the message, and didn't want to communicate with the dispatcher or stay on the line. Pulled over a cop car (nice change) to let them know and they were requesting the job.
