michaelmurfy: @jonathan18 that’s more of an estimate but you can do a proper test from the service menu if you’re keen on seeing. As your car has a LFP battery you need to charge it to 100% every week.

Mine - which is a NCA battery being a long range model 3 is sitting at 96% in Tessie which sounds about right. I have not done a full test from the service menu. I’m up to 38,000km too.

Thanks, @michaelmurfy - I remember reading this test was available but hadn’t dug anymore into it. Doing so now it refers to a need for it to be plugged into a ‘level two’ charger. I see references to that meaning one using 240v, but assume that they’re talking in the US context where a ‘level one’ charger is 120v, and level two would be more like a ‘fast’ 240v 7.4kW unit as opposed to the basic UMC I use. I wonder if our 16A caravan charger would be adequate?

My understanding is the encouragement to charge weekly to 100% is more about keeping the BMS happy, rather than about it being necessary to actually manage/minimise degradation. Earlier this year I did exactly that - let it run down over the week and then charge fully once - for a number of weeks but this did didly to the stats.

As I rarely need the full range it’s not something I panic over; I imagine it’ll be many years before degradation has a real-world impact.

Anyway, back to s/h Model 3s - can anyone confirm when NZ-new M3s started shipping with LFP batteries?

Is $45k a realistic price to pay for an LFP-era model? I’ve read some suggesting s/h prices will drop once the Highland refresh is released - does that have any substance to it? We had also previously talked about waiting for the ‘M2’ to be released, but I’ve not heard anything more about this in ages…

The Model 3 refresh is officially launched! The Long Range has made a return (no Performance, yet) and is now under the rebate value although it doesn't arrive until Q1 next year so if we have a change of government that might not be relevant.

Car Wow has a walk-through of the changes. Looking forward to seeing how many of these work their way into a refreshed Y (whenever that may be).

Nice refresh with the exception of getting rid of the steering wheel stalks.

I like the fact I can operate all the controls on the steering wheel and column without having to take my eyes off the road. Not sure how accurate my muscle memory would be for more (and smaller) controls on the yoke of the steering wheel. Unless of course we don’t bother using turn signals?😁

I like the cover over the cup holders and the LED accent lighting. Realistically, the Long Range coming in at about the same as I bought my RWD for 18 months ago is the biggest surprise.

No USS’s or radar and no driver’s display (head up or down) means there probably isn’t going to be any reason for me to shell out $20K+ to update.

And how do you deal with indication while going around roundabouts if the buttons are on the steering wheel?

Yes, that is true. The removal of the ultrasonic sensors is a big downside too, IMHO.

I meant in my current vehicle. Not the new one. Two stalks and two scroll wheels means not having to look for the control.

The new model 3 is a marked improvement in looks over what was previously one of the ugliest modern cars in existence. It's not pretty, but it's making some positive improvements. The interior is still pretty soulless. The lack of a HUD is a deal breaker for me, it's insane a modern car wouldn't have it.

It would be nice if the drive was a lot more engaging, maybe that's been improved. My 3 drives in a 3 left me cold as a driving experience. The steering felt numb and road feel was 'disconnected'.

Quite a few quality-of-life improvements. I'm flabbergasted that they would move indicators onto the steering wheel, that's not going to cause anyone issues EVER.

Some of what I see reduces manufacturing costs a little bit.

No foglights

One piece tail lights. The current two piece ones aren’t that great. Not sure the new ones are much of an improvement. Still designed for the N.American market and the rest of the world will have amber indicators wedged in there somewhere.

No steering column stalks. I assume the drive mode selector has been moved to the screen. So owners will probably have to rely on voice commands a bit more instead of the tiny buttons on the steering wheel.

And of course the parking sensors and cruise radar had already been removed.

There are additions though. I was surprised by the rear seat screen. I don’t carry people in the rear seats very often, so that would be wasted. I would rather they put the second screen in front of the driver. It will be interesting to see if it’s in all the models. Likewise the ambient lighting strips. Ventilated seats might be novel to try.

Looks are subjective and the changes aren’t as great as when they face lifted (literally) the Model S.

Never say never, but can’t see myself in one. For a while at least…….😉

Seems crazy for them to put in a second screen in the back seats, instead of some form of screen for the driver. It is this sort of thing that makes it impractical for many. Lack of indicator stalks is also a big one. I thought the model 3 was supposed to be the car for everyone, an the crazy stuff is more for the higher models.

The model Y is more ugly. Although the new Ionic 6 is pretty bad too.

I guess indicator stalks are pretty pricey, so you would hope they would be passing on the cost savings. A pity there is no minimum standard for that sort of thing in NZ.

I wonder if the new tires will be compatible with the current M3? I’ll probably be ready for a new set after the Highland has been around for a year or so.

Kind of disappointing that the silver and burgundy colours that were rumoured haven’t eventuated.

If the rebate cap remains relevant, then red is over the limit (again) but this time for the Long Range. However, if my memory serves me correctly, the long range was $90K+. It’s now sub $80K (non red). So that would appear to be a cost saving.

There were rumours that the computer had a second display port. I guess that has been used for the rear display rather than upgrades like a driver’s display.

The steering wheel controls are probably going to be like the headphone socket on iPhones. A big stink for a start, then everyone just got used to the idea. But it is a “take it or leave it” option, so Fanbois will think it’s the greatest thing since sliced bread, others will need to be convinced and the rest will just go “nope”. I got used to driving a car with minimal controls and displays, but I did have to add the hud to be really comfortable. Now when I get in most cars, I think how cluttered they feel.

I was also thinking about how long it will be for the Model Y facelift because of the cost savings from the parts commonality with the M3 (headlights, tail lights, seats, steering wheel, display). I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s announced as under development in the next 12 months.
