I guess indicator stalks are pretty pricey, so you would hope they would be passing on the cost savings. A pity there is no minimum standard for that sort of thing in NZ.

The basic stalk is probably a common item with some minor cosmetic change. Jaguar XJ6 stalks were $100s dearer than Hillman Hunter but only differed in shape of knob.

Is this being done for a better reason than Elon doesn't like?

There was an interesting analysis during a Model 3 tear down done by Sandy Munro. He focused particularly on design decisions that were made to minimise cost. Either through materials or manufacturing (and assembly) process. The removal of the stalks is another step along this path. As is moving the foglights into the headlight assembly and making the tail lights one piece per side.

The ultimate goal is autonomy, so Musk would probably do away with the steering wheel as well if he thought he could get away with it!

And I assume traffic roundabouts aren’t really a thing in the USA? Because that is the biggest drawback to the indicator switch vs stalk (ie reversing the indication direction). That is a mandatory requirement in a lot of countries (including NZ, although you wouldn’t know that from observation).

Now that I’ve seen a couple of videos, at least they have retained the scroll wheels so you should be able to locate the other buttons by feel. Hopefully the buttons require a positive press rather than an inadvertent brush past. That is a problem I have encountered on some some the VWAG cars I have tried lately.

No, they don't really have roundabouts in the USA*

They're regarded as such a revolutionary idea that Mythbusters even did a program on how this crazy European idea might even give higher throughput at a crossroads than the American idea of having four "Stop" signs and letting people sort it out.
{Spoiler alert: the roundabout won hands down}

I’m finding it difficult to see what the RWD doesn’t have compared to the launch vehicle (M3LR). All the stuff I’ve seen online is either from the Tesla China or Tesla Europe website. Is the rear screen only in the M3LR? The upgraded audio definitely is (according to overseas websites).

It would appear that the car now has a front (bumper mounted) camera. So hopefully that would mean a 360 birds-eye view is possible, and alleviates some of my concerns about the USS removal. My car still thinks I’m pulling up beside a semi-trailer when I drive into my garage. So I would rather rely on a camera view than Tesla-vision giving its interpretation of what is around me.

Not sure how manoeuvring backwards and forwards by using onscreen selection will be compared to having the mode selector on the stalk.

The battery and motors are supposedly unchanged, so LFP in the RWD and NMC in the LR. One of the main selling points for me was the LFP battery.

The Americans seem a bit butt-hurt that the update debuted in Europe.

While some nice changes, as a current M3 owner I wouldn't be going all out and ordering a new M3.

Plus, initial batches of Teslas don't have the best reputation for overall finish so happy to wait.

Update: It would be massive for me if the standard range went up to 600km.

That is probably a range you will only see if you are driving at nana speeds. The extended range is purely down to better drag coefficients, not larger battery or different drivetrain.

The steering wheel controls are probably going to be like the headphone socket on iPhones. A big stink for a start, then everyone just got used to the idea. But it is a “take it or leave it” option, so Fanbois will think it’s the greatest thing since sliced bread, others will need to be convinced and the rest will just go “nope”. I got used to driving a car with minimal controls and displays, but I did have to add the hud to be really comfortable. Now when I get in most cars, I think how cluttered they feel.

Definitely a nope for me. But I know exactly what you mean about other cars feeling cluttered.

Just received an invitation to view the new Model 3 at the Ponsonby showroom on Friday (24 Nov). No easy parking, too many people and K’ Road on a Friday afternoon. It will be a zoo.

And I know I won’t be able to get past “no stalks”, so what’s the point?

Yeah, I would wait until you can actually test drive the car. All the design changes are well documented in so many YouTube videos.

I got the invite to the reveal in Sydney; don’t think I’ll pop over for this either…

(Joking; it’s because I signed up for emails from both the Au and NZ sites in case the former got alerts re MY release before the latter; somehow I unsubscribed from the wrong one so only get Au updates now!)

Having the indicator as a couple of buttons on the left side of the steering wheel is beyond stupid as pretty much everyone seems to agree.
It would be a mind bender to work out which button when the wheel is rotated away from straight ahead.
Keeping the stalk is the sane thing to do.
Next best option would have been a swipe area on the touchscreen or on the top edge of the touchscreen.

I really wonder how the lack of stalks will impact sales of their cars in countries that aren't the US.

Seems a bit crazy that they're able to even consider a design like this for a mass produced car. I'm sure a lot of people will be going down the route of third-party stalk addons, such as what Enhance Automotice is doing (makers of the S3XY buttons & knob).

It’s the way the industry is going. Next step will be removing the steering wheel altogether

Colour me ignorant, but "the way the industry is going" and one technology company removing stalks from it's product doesn't seem congruent to me.

Never know, you might get used to these button things, no problem.

Or maybe its just a dumb idea like touch screens in general in cars.

As I mentioned somewhere, Citroen did things properly decades ago with switches not stalks behind the steering wheel.
