I read somewhere the other day that you need a drivers license to ride these.

Surely, then, if a policeman witnesses dangerous driving (on a footpath, or running a red light - which I've seen a couple do in the Quay St cycleway), then fines and demerits apply? I understand there are limited numbers of police, and they probably have better things to do, but a week-long blitz on them would get word out that they are serious machines, and just as much care must be taken riding one as riding a moped, motorbike, or driving a car.

Riding it without a license = big ass fine?

I don't think the law requires one, just the smallprint from Lime.. Technically Lime could charge you any penalties defined in the 'contract' for the breach, although I doubt they would.

How fast did it seem to the pedestrians around you?

Velocity is squared, so a tripling of speed is a massive increase in impact energy.

Frankly I can see things go the other way with safety. Pedestrians being dicks by intentionally getting in the way and complaining. I remember very clearly getting harassed when I was a kid riding his bike to school. The school got involved because the old codger wouldn't stop telling kids off riding their bikes on the footpath.

This was on a two-lane main road with no cycle lanes, it's mighty unsafe to have kids riding on the road with vehicles. Same deal with the lime scooters, they're not fast enough or have wheels for road travel. Honestly I'd rather have them on the footpath because 'car vs cyclist' tends to be quite a bit worse than 'scooter knocks over somebody'.

I think people are over dramatising the speed aspect. Anybody with a regular bicycle, scooter, skateboard can easily hit those speeds on a decline. The majority of people shouldn't be speeding with these things on the footpath as they are highly likely to be averse from crashing into anything least of all other people. Yes there will be idiots using this, but you already have idiots everywhere in life.

It felt that I was just ambling along steadily and quietly. If a kid was using their manual scooter on a footpath, as in playing, they would probably be faster or at least similar. Me on a scooter is a better bet than kids playing fast on their manual ones, let alone skateboarders. 10kph? That seems a little slow, so 12?

As long as the average eScooter rider doesn't ride like a spandex wearing uber cool cyclist on his 2 pound $5000 cycle, it should be fine.

I agree on safety but comparing them to even a 50cc moped is silly. Lime scooters have rubbish torque (you need to push yourself up a hill) and are far lighter than a moped.

I think someone described it well before, they're far too similar to the kids scooters to be taken in a serious context.

This would be a shame, typical of many things, a few poor decisions may impact the majority. These things are no different to any other thing on our roads or footpaths that present risk, many of which have already been mentioned. Heck even runners can be a hazard on the footpath if they choose to be.

I do side with Brownlee on this. People just making noise about it cause arguing on local facebook pages got boring.

rugrat: I saw about 4 people going down a one way in middle of road last night going in wrong direction.
Light goes green for cars other side, people on scooters had to take evasive action as cars weren’t slowing down and going head on into them.

The police need to start pulling people up, they’re riding them like there’s no rules.

Or is there no rules?

It would be the same rules as for a pedestrian or mobility scooter and they can be summarised as "watch where you're going don't be a dick".

all im saying that if someone's 80 year grandmother is walking home with her groceries and some school kid crashes into her with a scooter and puts her in hospital with a broken hip , then either they will ban them or bring in really strict regulations that will take the fun out of riding them.

Common sense is not as common as you think.
