LiveM: Over the last couple of days I have tried a few scooters, and found the Zero 9 (1200W) is the minimum for this kind of hill. However, the Zero 8 and Ecoreco L5 will handle a slightly lesser grade pretty well.

For me the L5 is about as massive a scooter as I would want, and I preferred its bigger deck. The Zero 8 is a little larger and power felt the same with 768W & 960W respectively in their specs.

The suspension on the L5 and Zero 8 are both absolutely fine. I had not expected that with the solid tyres and the L5's spring suspension. I took them over the Victorian-era cobblestones around Victoria Park Market with much missing grout as well as various obstacles on footpaths and roads nearby.

Now I remember that the Zero 9 is bigger than the Eco Reco L5 and I was comparing it more with the Zero 8.

Now I am even more confused; unfortunately I am unable to travel at the moment due to staffing issues at work so not able to get to Christchurch to do any test drives.

So the best I can do is watch Youtube videos and try to help my decision along. I am still thinking the Zero 9 is going to be the one I end up with, however I am tempted with the Eco for price and potential better portability ...

On Friday I ordered the Zero 9 from Freed; what was interesting is that I was interested how Part Pay would work on a $1500 item as I believed you only get a ~$200 credit, meaning the first payment would be $1350 with the rest being $50 over the 3 remaining payments. However I couldn't fully check this out as I needed to complete the payment to see the payment structure - so I moved on. Overnight I got an email from Freed who noticed I had left an item in my cart - as an incentive if I applied a coupon I would get a free "bike" lock.

Coupon didn't work, but Freed was nice enough to just add one to the shipment

According to tracking it is with the courier in Dunedin .. hopefully I get it today, otherwise tomorrow.

Received my Zero 9 last night; went on the charger at 6pm and finished charging around 5am; was checking out Freed getting some specs for a friend who was asking and saw that they were now selling the Zero 9 for $200 less. Hopefully they come to the party regarding the sale price considering I only just purchased it

Looking forward to my first ride tonight after work

The above statement was published despite Torpedo 7 having a 30-day no-hassles returns policy. Except it is a hassle to be made a fool and to have to jump through hoops.

Interesting; I saw that preloved Zero 9 a few months back but it wasn't advertised on the website when I started looking again a few weeks ago. Wish I had of known the direct URL - though I do like "new" stuff :-)

EDIT: Just got a reply - they won't come to the party at all.

I had a comment was I was destroying the box last night for the recycling bin - hope you don't need to return anything..
I do like the comment about being honest because they like to have a happy customer

I'd suggest any Zero scooter owner retains the box if they're able to find the space to store it.

I had to send mine back for repairs (for which they charged a return delivery fee - despite the advice I received from MBIE that this was in breach of the CGA) and I'm so glad I had kept the box.

I have kept the box for my eMicro scooter and it was handy to arrange sending it for maintenance but fortunately I didn’t have to pay any of the shipping. I also could have dropped it to a local authorised seller but Micro wanted to look at it themselves in this particular case.

To late now, but it wasn't an option; too many other things in storage as is to add a very large empty box

I sent my email last night - shall update to see if they actually reply
(I thought about pasting it here, but decided against it)

I did ride the scooter a couple of times, once just after work and once in the evening to test out the lights - the strong cold wind made it less than ideal riding conditions and by the end of the ride I couldn't feel the finger I was using for the throttle. I had to tighten the adjustable steam after the first ride, it was slowly collapsing during the ride.
Not sure that the brakes are as good as they good be, but I'll take another look tonight after finding some maintenance videos by Falcon on YouTube.

Also having trouble collapsing the scooter so I can get it into the car; but I'll have another go tonight

These scooters go fast enough to warrant wearing decent gear, whether it be for protection from cold or if you come off. Riding to work (10 minutes) I generally wear full-finger cycling gloves and a thick fluro jacket, and in the heights of winter even had to resort to a thin balaclava under my helmet (as otherwise my head throbbed with pain from the cold!).

Agree that collapsing the Zero scooters is a pain, but it seems easy once you learn the knack (my problem is I do it so rarely I forget how!). There are videos online on how to do this, including from Freed.

I've generally found Freed fine to deal with, though note they never responded when I pointed out they were on dodgy territory expecting people to pay for shipping for repairs that need to be covered under the CGA.

I've found that the trick to collapsing it is to hold the front brake on, makes it very easy to give the handlebars a quick push forward to change the angle and release whilst pushing the lever with your foot & then collapses easily.

Without putting the brake on then the whole scooter just moves forward and it becomes almost impossible to collapse because the angle of the stem has to change to allow the lever to release without strain.
