I'll pick it up for you and deliver it within 4 weeks. 😆

Haha; update to this is that I am confirmed for an in person pickup on the 7th and I have to now organise flights/ferry and accommodation - and I really hope that the lockdown in Wellington doesn't cause too many issues for getting back to the South.

I assume you mean potential lockdown?

Not sure of elsewhere in the thread but 2 points

1) If you truly believe in saving the planet / green issues then why do you need a subsidy, wear the cost of the extra 8k over the life of the car.

2) Do something about parents doing a journey for no other reason than dropping their kids off at school. Make them walk , take public transport or ride a bike. This would put so much towards reducing emissions and the kids could then tell all their friends what they have done to save the planet.

Do you have kids? Both our kids go to school near us. My daughter is 9, but not mature enough to safely make the trip by bike or walk, and it's not an option to bus her. I don't think it's likely I'd allow her to do this for another few years. She is a lovely kid, but very distractible. The consequences of her making a mistake are literally life and death.

My son rides to school most days. In foul weather, we drive him, because we don't trust Auckland drivers in wet weather or low visibility. I am an adult, with good bike skills, and even if it was practical, to ride to work, I wouldn't because drivers in Auckland are so inconsiderate. If there was a cycle way, then that would be something I'd consider, if I had an option to shower once I arrived.

I rode 6KM's to school in rural Waikato in all weather, if my bike was not an option, I walked, but that was a long time ago and the world is a different place.

Your idea is great, and applies to a lot of kids, but it's not blanket possible.

Major Simpsons vibes from this post:

Marge Simpson: Your teenage son or daughter will think this wishbone necklace is really cool!

Man at Swap Meet : I doubt my son or daughter is that stupid.

I really hope my kids have better things to talk about that what they're doing to 'save the planet'.

I'd rather my kids be aware of it, and discuss it, than ignore it.

I'd be proud of my kids if they were talking about it.

I'd rather my kids not feel obligated to take on planet-killing levels of existential dread about the environment and hopelessness of capitalism in fixing the world they live in.

There's plenty of time for that once they become adults.

My kids are taught about being more aware of the affect they have on the planet at school. We don't expose them to the sorts of dread you are speaking of, same way we don't let them watch horror movies.

Keeping my kids innocent (Important to my wife and I) is not the same as keeping them ignorant.

If you want kids to be bragging about what their parents are doing to reduce emissions then you're going to be drilling in some pretty uncomfortable truths if you want them to talk about that instead of... video games or.... IDK what kids do. Tik Toks? Snap Chats? Instant Grams?

(I used to play hours of QB Gorillas, I am a poor yardstick for well-adjusted children).

But my point is I'd rather fall back on the 'it's better for the environment' and not get a whole heap more specific than that for as long as possible, unless we have an Aha! moment about what we're actually going to do that isn't kill each other in wars or live in caves.

Ironically the best thing people can do environmentally for the planet is not have kids.

So kids bragging about parents being environmentally friendly is a bit of an oxymoron.

Batman:

https://www.driven.co.nz/news/watch-who-really-benefits-from-the-government-s-clean-car-feebate-scheme/

relating to 2nd hand / imports

Makes sense. People will do anything for the next $. Maybe shift the feebate to a regobate. Easy enough to levy ICE and rebate electric/low emmissions with rego and WOF. Got an EV? get your rego and WOF for free plus here is some cash as well. Got an ICE? Bring the chequbook.  Maybe focus on day to day running costs than the one off purchase price?
