networkn: You know what would have a bigger impact than all the EVs and tree planting in the world? Population control. Less people achieve all of the above in far greater numbers by magnitude. It's all very socially unacceptable though, isn't it? Instead let's build more infrastructure to support more people, both of which are high emissions.

Or go Vegan.

Ps I eat meat and have kids - but I did stop at 2. :-)

Totally agree. in the 60ies it was all about overpopulation. That is still the issue today we just call it climate change now. Basically the consumption of resources by an ever increasing number of humans.

When I look at the world with my pessimism hat on... We are screwed because over the past 100y about 1.5bn people lived way beyond Earth's needs causing the issues we have now. There are now 4bn people waiting in the wings to also get into that group. There's no way anyone will tell them "no you can't". While socially that is a no-brainer from a sustainability perspective that will compound our issues. With the little political will there is and the shift to the right we will miss the last point that we can actually still achieve a turn-around (or have missed it already). The only question remains if humans can invent their way out of it. I highly doubt that. At least for the masses. There will be water wars and then there will be land wars and then there will be survival wars. Depending on the tools used that will be a short timeframe or a long one but we are still essentially tribal and will not cooperate globally any time soon. This again will compound issues.

So yeah that's the pessimistic view. Sadly I give that a likelihood of 70%+. I try and think positive but the days are filled with proof to the contrary. It is hard. Even in my own 4 walls I am prepared to drive EV, use public transport, have solar. But I am not yet prepared to give up my lifestyle and downsize. I full well know I need to if I am going to save the planet. I know I will need an external force to get me going and I will resent it. I like to think I will agree though when the time comes but it will be too late then. All pretty sad and dark. I have days where I wonder if my children will have children and if they do, what world that will be or if they are doomed. On worse days I wonder the same about me.

I didn’t realise population control was included in the petition (You know. The one that is the subject of this thread).

Hey guys, how much have EV prices come down and can dealers be negotiated with to clear stock of these (anyone bought recently)? I'm thinking to get one (yes crazy time I know) but would really want to see a drop in price - and apaprently the market is flooded with them so seems a good time to negotiate....

Well, sales crashed in January. There is ... debate ... on this thread as to whether that was actually related to the end of the clean car scheme or not. Presumably dealers would be amenable to a small discount but I don't get the impression they ever had whole flocks of cars just sitting on the lot ready for sale - both the cars we bought needed to be ordered months ahead of time.

I think the drop in EV sales may also be due to the slowing economy. People are trying to pay their sky high mortgages and may not be so keen on such a big spend at the moment.

Although I do think the removal of the rebate wouldn't have helped.

If you have the cash to buy, this year is going to be a good time to buy. I reckon as stocks pile up, dealers are likely to drop the prices. Dealers purchase over a year ahead, so expect some good deals.

If that was the case then sales of utes, which are as or more expensive than most EVs, would have dropped as well. But they didn't. There was a dip in December - just prior to the fee going away - and in January and February sales were higher than 2023.

So on the EV side you have a big jump in December, followed by a sustained crash in Jan/Feb - which is exactly what you would expect if the cause was the EV rebate, and on the polluting side you have a big dip in December, followed by a sustained uplift in Jan/Feb, which is also exactly what you would expect if the cause was the pollution fee.

If the drop was due to a slowing economy, it would be a drop in both.

There has been no change in Kia EV6 prices since I ordered mine in May last year. The loss of the Clean Car Discount won't impact any that proceed over the limit, but there's also been no change on ones under the limit. Maybe it's still too early to tell.

There may be some special process coming up, with dealers who registered a car to claim the discount. I think they have to wait about 3 months to be able to sell them, so look for them later this month.

Second hand imported cars are such a large number that I suspect the 'new car' sales stats don't really offer full insight into whats happening.

To get a full picture of how % are progressing of various Hybrids, Plug ins, Electric and full ICE in car and light vehicle  population.

EV6 GTs are reduced to around 80-90k
