Tesla is not the only company to tinker with indicator stalks.

I gather VW tried to remove them and then relented.

Citroen moved the indicator to a button not on a stalk.

Maybe the button on the wheel is fine - I guess it's early days on whether its a real problem or not.

Personally, I still find the model Y a little annoying.

After 45 years of driving, it's the first car for me with the indicator stalk on the left.

Occasionally I have a 'lapse' and have used the stalk on the right by mistake.

That used to just turn the wipers on , but the Tesla right stalk activates cruise control if you accidentally think you are indicating to the right - potentially a little dangerous.

Seeing its all software controlled, they could have probably made the stalks customisable and choose what side was the indicator and which was the cruise/gear selector.

Someone actually pointed out that the RHD market has a disadvantage over the LHD market in regards to the touchscreen.

Given that 90% of people are right handed, the LHD users have 'easier' conrol of the touchscreen using their right hand.

Us in the RHD market have to use our left hands and we tend to not be so accurate with that.

(Apologies to left handers everywhere - I guess you are potential winners in the RHD market).

Finally a benefit for being both gauche and sinister!

(TBH, despite this apparent advantage of being a south-paw I still find it difficult to adjust screen settings when driving a Tesla; some things they've improved, eg it's now easier to adjust temp, but it could be better - especially if they allow more control via the steering wheel buttons, eg how MG4s can have temp and fan speed controls mapped to the steering wheel buttons.)

The only climate I adjust in mine is the recirculation, when I am stuck behind some kia or Hyundai piece of crap diesel that's spewing black clouds from its flogged out non maintained diesel engine with no filters. Never touch it otherwise, except to blast the cool if I forgot to pre-do that before leaving.

And how many people are in your car when you're driving?!

My experience is that it's much more work maintaining an acceptable environment when the car has all four of my family (each who has different preferences) vs just myself!

I've been on a few summer road trips and it's not been a problem - keep it on 21 and everyone is happy. The one thing I tend to do when the season changes to summer is change the fan preference from "Med" to "High".

I have had the occasional front seat passenger who thinks 21 is too cold, so I just enable the split mode and turn up the temp on their side for them

My daughter is ridiculously fond of the butt-warmers but unless she's sitting in the back she can handle that herself.

Time to upgrade to the Highland model so she can still control it herself when she's in the backseat 😉

Yeah, YMMV of course. But terrible design choices such as the inability to turn off the front passenger vents while still having the driver vents on really doesn’t help us; we have to resort to a piece of rubber blocking the left vents to avoid my wife getting massive tooth/headaches from the AC.

While it’s good they’ve resolved this with the Highland M3, I’m surprised this wasn’t something they can’t (or won’t?) fix via an update for existing cars, given there’s clearly the ability to disable the front passenger side (as it doesn’t turn on if no-one’s sitting in that seat).

I don't even have that option in my "ancient" 2019 Model 3 😉

But you're right, the ability does seem to be there so they should add the same Highland option to those vehicles. Tesla does have a bit of a lag with getting software features from new models trickled down to the existing fleet. An example would be the wiper speed controls via the scroll wheel - the new S & X got that back in 2021 as a launch feature but it only made it to the rest of us just a few months ago.

I see my M3 has a software update (2023.44.1) that allows you to set autopilot start with a single pull down on the right stalk rather than a double one. I’ll let it install overnight, but doubt I’ll change the setting. I use the adaptive cruise on its own way more than lane-keeping/adaptive cruise of autopilot.

I just watched “Tesla Tom” on his ‘Ludicrous Feed’ YouTube channel drive the new M3 in Sydney, focusing particularly on roundabouts. What a hopeless ‘improvement’ doing away with the stalks is.

Apparently the update takes away any easy way to get into cruice control if you turn that on. So I am not about to touch it.

Yes that sounds like a change I don't want. I hope it can be disabled.

Haven’t been to the car post update, but the way I read the update notes, the single press activation needs to be selected in the settings. I can’t help but think this change is for the benefit of ‘stalk-less’ Teslas. If you can’t manage a double press on the stalk, maybe you’re too feeble to be driving.

I'm hoping the Christmas update has some more useful stuff.

Yea, I'm leaving the AP selection as a double flick.

But I also noticed that since the 2023.44.1 update, the car has braked suddenly on a couple of occasions when doing the usual drive to/from work. Not nice when there's a car following you. I just hope they didn't think I was brake checking them.

It's been fine before this particular update.

I just wish there was a "dumb" cruise control option sometimes, where the car just maintains a set speed and ignores everything else going on around it. The slow-downs while going around swept corners on the open road at 100kph is annoying, and it's always the same corners so I hold the accelerator pedal down to maintain speed.

Everytime I have had the random slowdowns its shown a car in the next lane in black as if it was following that instead.

It really needs to be assertive and not act like a scared driver if it thinks someone might be changing lanes over.
