MikeB4: I have been overtaken when stopping for pedestrian crossings and over taken when indicating a righthand turn. I would say that the bike rider was too busy riding like a complete idiot with no regard to the safety of anyone around him. Doing 100Kmh in a 50Kmh zone is absolute stupidity.

The bike rider is the most vulnerable participant in this crash - if anyone was going to get killed it was them - so they'd first have to have no regard for their own safety and be trying to die for that statement to be true. People with no regard for others safety are more likely to drive something that offers a little insulation from the consequences of their recklessness such as SUV's with bull bars, not an unforgiving vehicle that amplifies the consequences or recklessness like a motorcycle.

I am having trouble figuring out our local bus lane.... i thought the rule was you can enter it 50m before you turn left... there are even dotted lane lines that indicate the 50m.

But, while I am waiting to get to the 50m mark, every car behind me are going into the bus lane and zooming by, even though they are up to 300m back or so. I am the ONLY car that waits, every time.

This lane is at the lights too, so I might have to wait for 3 or 4 light phase changes before i reach the 50m mark, yet all these others are getting through on the first phase because they just ignore the rules.

Today, I was 100m out, cop behind me. I'm signalling left, still waiting to get to the 50m mark cos the lights are red....cop starts flashing his lights at me , telling me to just go, even though it is against the rules.

Are we supposed to follow the damn law or not?

Yep, I was trying to correlate the post at the top of this page with the details in the story but it seemed to be talking about two different bikers

Convoys of boy racers hit the mount ... stupid f*(*(* idiots. This guy did a couple of close passes then a fast u-turn. Was honking at all his mates in other cars .

I had some dashcam footage about 6 months ago of idiots weaving in and out of traffic and leaning out and slapping cars, Took to police and they were like yeah we will get right on that and rolled their eyes. They could give a toss until somebody got hurt then it would all be arse covering it really p*sses me off to be honest.

The biker was doing 100kmh in a 50kmh zone, so I can believe very easily that he had no regard for his safety or that of others.

Muppets are muppets no matter the vehicle. This person would likely have been just as hazardous on a bicycle, car, or god forbid a B-double.

Possibly more an indication of our narrow roads? Have a look at the left side wheels on the semi entering the corner. Driver got back onto his side fairly quickly.

at the start of the corner i agree his left wheels were on the white lines but at the end of the corner where you can see him clearly over the yellow lines there was heaps of space on the left.

Its a corner so they have to do that to keep the trailer from going off the side. Road is too narrow to function and it just one of many hopeless roads in the country that cause problems like this.

I know a couple of people who drive/drove big trucks on SH1 on the South Island. They have incredibly tight schedules to keep. One of them resigned because it was so stressful, and the other still does it, but hates it. So it seems if you want to keep the job you have to push push push to complete the trip inside your hours. The one who resigned went to work as a loader at Bluebridge in Picton, and was later crushed between a loader and a truck. He is more or less OK now, but it seriously messed him up. Not sure if there is a moral there, except life was totally out to get him!

Regards narrow roads, we used to regularly have trucks go off the road on that windy stretch north of Kaikoura. Do you remember the one that dump rat poison in the sea and stopped the crayfish collection for ages? The road is better now thanks to the Kaikoura earthquake, but it is still scary having one of those trucks behind you. How on earth do they corner so fast?
