My car does a random slowdown with TACC engaged on the Northwestern Motorway (Auckland) westbound just after the tunnel exit. Does it every time at the same point regardless of traffic. I’m yet to see anything on the display to explain why.

I installed the “Christmas Update” - 2023.44.30.2 (sorry I mean “Holiday Update”) overnight. I just like to say how massively underwhelmed I am by it compared to the previous two.

The headline feature, “3D parking display” is obviously not for vehicles that haven’t been crippled by the removal of USS.

And they’ve added the “Autopilot Jail” function to get around the US lawsuits involving improper use. Break the rules 5 times and you’re locked out for a week.

Yeah, this has been well discussed on NZ Tesla FB groups; knowing your love for FB, I've copied and pasted below from a thread on there I started in early Nov. So the problem's been around for at least eight weeks and still not solved. I'd rather Tesla put their effort into fixing problems (especially ones they created in the first place!) as opposed to adding features and providing us with silly Xmas-themed shit we never asked for.

Me: I’m interested to know if anyone else is experiencing weird behaviour from TACC at the moment. When TACC’s enabled, over the last couple of weeks our Model Y will, for no apparent reason, slow down to as low as 35km for a while in a 50km zone, and then return to the originally set speed (but do so relatively slowly compared to normal). Nothing on the road in front of me, no warnings on the screen. Interestingly, I’ve noticed it happen repeatedly in the same place (it does happen in a number of locations, but I couldn’t say if it occurs every time in these same locations). Anyone else having this problem, and ideally does anyone know what causes it and what can be done about it? TIA.

1st response: With the latest update it seems to be reacting to intersections now, as if some of the FSD beta code has "leaked". However, there are a few spots where this map data must be incorrect as there are a few where I'm on the road with the right of way but it will start slowing down for an upcoming intersection. One such spot is the intersection of SH73 with Hayes Rd (https://maps.app.goo.gl/5HSp7kMxa1vaU3iNA) where if I'm approaching from the east, it will always slow down for it.

Does it do this if you have a destination set in the navigation?

@Obraik: Are you saying you only have this problem when you're navigating somewhere? I get it both with or without.

There are few side roads along my commute (non-motorway) that it will slow down for unless I have a destination set

However one thing I do like is that it has made the blind spot indication actually useful now. Previously, you could put the rear-facing side camera view on the screen, but that requires you to look away from where you should be. Also, a car in the blind spot was indicated with a tasteful red in the traffic display, but that's even more distracting to look for.

Now, if there's a car in the blindspot the rear-facing camera view blinks red at the edge which is something you can notice out of the corner of your eye. They also seem to have done a hell of a lot of work colour-correcting those views (the cameras don't have a green channel) and they look completely natural now. Which is ... not important, really, but was noticeable.

Tried it yesterday. Navigation makes no difference. It still slows at the same spot. I couldn’t see anything to cause it on the display either.

Quite disappointed by the holiday update. Whereas last year I thought Wow! This year it’s Meh.

Orewa to Rotorua - 61% battery used. 4 people in the car.

Disappointed with Tesla Superchargers in Rotorua and Taupō as both struggled to go past 80kW and 65kW respectively.

gzt: Supercharger problem or temperature problem?

Supercharger considering I just drove 350km.

A note, Taupō back to Orewa I used just 65% dispite being 50km more than the Orewa to Rotorua trip.

I also noticed on cruise control the car would slow down suddenly out of nowhere. Happened 3 times during the day and it happened twice on a curve with oncoming cars and once just with nothing happening other than being on the open road.

This is just with cruise control at around 100kmh.

Highly likely you were power sharing in Taupō as that is a Gen 2 and are matched in pairs so if you've got somebody on 1B (and you're on 1A) then the total power you can use can halve.

If you've also got a higher SOH then your car will charge slower. I'd skip Taupō personally just shooting over to Rotorua if you're able to make it then charge there. I'm however a sucker with arriving with "just enough" having arrived home multiple times on 0% exactly and to superchargers with 1% at times - there is a buffer at 0% if it makes you feel any better here (I've never run out of charge).

I've actually been quite impressed with Z Energy's network this Christmas. Sure, there are some teething problems with the Redphase chargers (which are made right here in NZ) but I got 140kw from Z Ngatea and at 69c/kw it is one of the cheaper solutions for fast charging. I personally found I used their network more on this trip around the North Island than other networks.

Also the new Superchargers in Hamilton rock (however, my M3 LR only gets 250kw for a matter of seconds before going down to an average of 170kw).

I use Autopilot all the time - never Cruise Control (I have cruise control actually disabled via enabling Single Pull to start Autopilot in the settings). I find Autopilot can be quite good however you need to have you foot on the ready on the accelerator and always be ready to take control. I find I can cruise however with my right hand touching the right bottom of the steering wheel.

Shadows with adaptive cruise control "spook" it I've found and it appears it isn't as complex as Autopilot so has more phantom braking events. In my 2 years of ownership I never actually used adaptive. Many cars however do this with camera based systems like Tesla.

A common event of a sudden slowdown event is if a car is coming up on your left hand side or merging. I often just dis-engage Autopilot around on ramps when I see cars merging on. You get the hang of it.

Horses for courses I guess. I tend to use the TACC a lot (to avoid speeding) and the full autopilot less. Still pretty much exclusively on Motorway/Expressway driving. I don’t think a lot of NZ’s 100km/h roads are safe to use AP. I shake my head at some of the roads YouTubers operate in AP on.

Re the new Hamilton Superchargers, we found them by accident on 27 Dec when we went to the Cafe there for brunch. We weren’t in the M3, so didn’t get to try them but I strolled over and talked to a driver who was charging his MY who thought they had only just opened. They were on Plugshare but not the Tesla map.

I had to charge on Christmas Day and only the ones at Te Awa (The Base) showed in the Tesla Nav. We had to be let into the underground carpark by security guards as everything was locked up. They said they were “under instructions to let Tesla owners in”. So I’m glad the new SCs are available and are close to the Expressway. Unless you need to go to The Base for shopping, the others will be way more convenient.
