I think we're starting to see a generation of drivers who nearly always drive on suburban roads or dual carriageways and very rarely drive on 100 kph roads without a dividing strip. They get freaked out when they do.

I see a lot of drivers who cannot maintain the speed limit when the road isn't dead straight and in some cases slow down when there is oncoming traffic. You can be sure they'll drive at or above the speed limit on straight pieces of road making it impossible to pass at a legal speed when it is safe to do so.

These drivers need to realise what they're doing and let other drivers past.

I am having trouble figuring out our local bus lane.... i thought the rule was you can enter it 50m before you turn left... there are even dotted lane lines that indicate the 50m.

But, while I am waiting to get to the 50m mark, every car behind me are going into the bus lane and zooming by, even though they are up to 300m back or so. I am the ONLY car that waits, every time.

This lane is at the lights too, so I might have to wait for 3 or 4 light phase changes before i reach the 50m mark, yet all these others are getting through on the first phase because they just ignore the rules.

Today, I was 100m out, cop behind me. I'm signalling left, still waiting to get to the 50m mark cos the lights are red....cop starts flashing his lights at me , telling me to just go, even though it is against the rules.

Are we supposed to follow the damn law or not?

I believe the fines for Bus Lane infringements are payable to Auckland Transport (or the council - depending which city you are in) whereas speeding fines are payable to the police (as it's a safety thing) hence cops won't care less about council infringments.

Land Transport (Road User) Act 2004 states

F. a special vehicle lane reserved for a specific class or classes of vehicle unless—

(i)the vehicle is one of the class or classes of vehicle for which the lane is reserved; or

(ii)the vehicle is an emergency vehicle being used in an emergency.

The police officer absolutely can do something about it

The Road User Rule also states in 1.8 (3)

"A person is not in breach of this rule if that person proves that the act or omission complained of—
(a)
took place in compliance with the directions of an enforcement officer, a parking warden, a traffic signal, or a traffic sign; or"

So if a cop tells you to go remember his rego :-)

At 5.33: "Pulling in front of you and not speeding up"

This happens a lot in New Zealand. I mentioned here before: you are driving on the main road, no cars behind you and a bozo pulls out in front of you and goes on a 30 Km/h while you are approaching at 50 Km/h - or worst sometimes even on a highway where you are doing 100 Km/h.

Also mentioned in the video: people doing 35 Km/h on a 50 Km/h zone - or worse as I've seen people doing 35 Km/h, a "70" signs appear and they don't speed up at all - they simply completely ignored the sign, or if they saw it they think there's no need to speed up. This happens in urban roads where the speed can go up to 70 or 80 and people keep driving below 50.

oh man. I've just done (yesterday) west side of Coromandel on windy narrow road (cliff drop on one side, rocks on another), and convertible mustang female driver was doing:

- speed the hell up to 70-80km/h in 30-50 meters to the next corner
- slow the hell down to 20-30km/h just before or during the corner, so everyone doing 60km/h forced to break to 20-30km/h and last car, I would assume had to stop.
- doing 80-90-100km/h on straight road, so no one could overtake her
- not stopping at the slow vehicle bays (there were about 8-10 cars behind her, I was initially first before her, but than one very impatient minivan driver took me over, tailgated her, honk her, light flashed her before deciding it's ok to drive over 80km/h at 50km/h zone because she was doing 60-70km/h)

I slowed down at one point and used slow vehicle bay to let everyone go as I had enough. Cruised right at the back for sometime before it was safe to stop for a smoke and drink break.

When travelling with our caravan we can be visually abused or verbally abused. On our recent trip we had a muppet behind us sound his horn a few times and flashing his headlamps. When we pulled over at the first safe place to do so he pulled along side and hurled abuse and telling us to drive faster. The muppet may not be aware that the maximum speed with our caravan attached is 90km/h or he was an ignorant muppet I suspect that the later is the case.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

But seriously, removing myself from the battleground and cooling off just makes sense. Yes, it delays my travel and I probably shouldn't have to do it, but ultimately getting there safely is what really matters.

During Defensive Driving courses I learnt that driving angry or upset is as bad as driving intoxicated. Stopping and letting the muppets to go away is the best. I have learnt as I have got older that making the journey part of the destination makes drive and holidays so much more enjoyable.

Wellington Motorway closed this morning - I would have thought more traffic than previous weeks, seeing a lot of people extended holidays and came back last weekend (I drove to Paraparaumu on Sunday and traffic back to Wellington was heavy).

Nope, two people die because they were in an accident they caused by driving the wrong way into the traffic. And going by the photo in the article they were not going slow either.

Just how far did they have to drive on the wrong side to achieve that? Doesn't appear to be anywhere to get "accidentally" into that lane heading south between there and Ngauranga.

@sbiddle pointed out the photo is after the roof being removed - true but the rest of the cars still don't look in good conditions at all. And to have two people dead, they were not going slowly in the wrong way.
