@sbiddle pointed out the photo is after the roof being removed - true but the rest of the cars still don't look in good conditions at all. And to have two people dead, they were not going slowly in the wrong way.

Yep, roof cut off and placed in the median area out of the way by the looks of it.  That's the thing though, cars where cutting is required often look a lot worse after FENZ has worked their magic on them than they did immediately after the impact.  Glass removed, roof cut and peeled back, doors cut off for ease of access, and portions of the bodywork cut away to free trapped limbs etc.  Photos after that tend to show more damage.

But fully agree, two dead, two critically injured equals not insignificant speed at the time of impact.

Wellington Motorway closed this morning - I would have thought more traffic than previous weeks, seeing a lot of people extended holidays and came back last weekend (I drove to Paraparaumu on Sunday and traffic back to Wellington was heavy).

Nope, two people die because they were in an accident they caused by driving the wrong way into the traffic. And going by the photo in the article they were not going slow either.

Just how far did they have to drive on the wrong side to achieve that?  Doesn't appear to be anywhere to get "accidentally" into that lane heading south between there and Ngauranga.

At that time of the day you have to wonder that some sort of intoxication was involved.

While not exactly driving...

"Three people were inside a car when a bucket of fuel inside the car ignited at a Hawke's Bay petrol station, starting a massive forecourt inferno, police have confirmed."

Let that sink in: "bucket of fuel"

If you haven't seen the video of this fire you should.

Surprisingly frequently it is dementia rather than chemicals to blame.

Yeah, but two people inside a car at 4am is more likely something other than dementia.

The first lines of first two paragraphs in the article: "A driver travelled the wrong way for about 10 kilometres before colliding with an oncoming car". "The car entered the motorway and headed south after turning right from Cornish St in Petone."

The article also has a screenshot from google street view showing the intersection.  If you click on this location and jump back and forward along the road you'll see the intersection was showing as having a right hand turn in 2019.

As above, when I posted, they had not got any of those details up yet.  Plus, that intersection looks a whole lot different now (and for the past few years) as you've noted.  Set up for left exit from SH2 only and very clear signage and islands to prevent exiting from Cornish St onto SH2 in either direction.  Unfortunately there's no accounting for the lowest of the lowest common denominators (deliberately?) failing to observe any of that.

That section of Sh2 is very poorly designed and causes a lot of issues. Those side roads could have easily had their entry/exit to Sh2 closed and traffic redirected to the Petone interchange.

We've just had two weeks of cruising around the South Island on great roads (not one set of roadworks) and very courteous drivers.

I don't tend to hang about and on every occasion we came up to a slow driver they pulled over or didn't speed up at the passing lanes or straights so I could over take safely.

It was wonderful.

As soon as we got back to Kapiti it was back to roadworks and drivers dominating "their" road.

I swear the non stop roadworks we've had for nearly five years now has completely changed people's attitude to driving around here. Aggression is everywhere.

A bit off topic but here in New Zealand we seem to have perfected the art of taking forever with road construction. For the last 17 years there has always been significant road works with speed restrictions at between Hamilton and Auckland airport.

Video shows pair hang out of windows on Auckland's Southern Motorway

This is how dickheads get themselves killed. I wouldn't miss them but I'm sure their friends and family will. Some poor bugger will have to clean them up.
