nzkiwiman:

Holiday Update has ruined automatic wipers; full on rain and they just would not engage - I had to press the button, then they would wipe very slowly only after it had gotten past the point of being unsafe to drive.

Car just went in to get four new tyres - approx 31,000km on this set of 4 (28,500km for the first factory set). I may like to be a little heavy handed on my right foot ...

Woah ... I have nearly 60,000km on mine and I'm only just thinking I should consider a new set soon.

What's your travel profile like??.. City driving with lots of corners stopping and starting is really tough on tyres,

Driving in long straight highway/rural lines is much kinder...

Bridgestone talk about 50K km as a guaranteed wear distance, but I've seen US places talk about 50K miles

Edit: grammar

You're crazy.

You don't troll enough boy racers.

Meanwhile, 40,000km on my set. I got a slashed tyre at around 25,000km so had to replace 2 then then replaced the other 2 at 40,000km before a road trip as I was recommended to. Tyre rotations done every 10,000km too. Model 3 Long Range so may troll a fair few boy racers.

For you Aucklanders I believe Costco has some excellent deals.

I have noticed the same. It is reaction to complaints about them operating too much on a dry windscreen. In the meantime I’m not using the auto setting except when it changes itself in autopilot.

Back to being beta testers again.

Is it me or we can't book mobile tyre rotations? There's no option in the app other than going to a service centre.

It depends on the availability of mobile service techs. When I booked in my PWS retrofit at the Christchurch SC I asked if it could be done by mobile tech, which they said it could, but they didn’t have any mobile tech availability until sometime in January.

Cool that might be the issue now as most are still on holiday.

Thanks for that. I'll check the app again next week.

I've seen it mentioned both here and in another EV thread that referenced Tesla's- getting a mechanic to do the tyre rotation.

Is this simply a case of owners not wanting to / don't have the tools/time / inclination to do their own maintenance, or is there something specific about tyre rotations on a Tesla that mean you can't DIY this in your shed or on your drive?

The ‘tools’ might be part of the problem. Teslas come with nothing to change a tire. So you would need the jacking pucks, a lug wrench, at least two jacks (no spare to use while swapping tires around).

I watched a YouTube video where the guy used one jack and just lifted the car until both wheels on one side were clear of the ground. Looked really ropey and dangerous. Plus it doesn’t solve the problem if you are doing a diagonal swap. (Not sure what the correct rotation is.)

Getting a technician to do it falls into the same bracket as having a mowing contractor do your lawns or getting Uber Eats.

I went and viewed the new Model 3. I like the led accent lighting and the exterior with new head and tail lights looked good.

The interior looked even more minimalist without the stalks and the ventilated seats are a bonus. No ultrasonic parking sensors of course (or cruise radar) but at least this one is rated to tow in NZ (750kg).

Will take one for a test drive to see if I could live with the things it’s missing to get a quieter more comfortable ride. Would like to know if my aftermarket HUD would work with this update.

In many years of car ownership I’ve never once rotated the tyres on my or my wife’s ICE cars; I simply don’t have the tools or the inclination to do it. If it involves much more skill than necessary for topping up windscreen fluid then I’m probably not the man for the job!

This hasn’t changed since we both moved to EVs. I’m happy to get my local tyre shop to do it - I think they charged me $40 for rotating the tyres on my Model Y, and that was only because that car wasn’t on their books; next time it’ll be free.

I think the common discussion re Teslas’ tyre rotation is also partly driven by the overall more obsessive nature of (a decent proportion of) Tesla owners; you only have to join one of the Tesla FB groups to see this in all its glory.

I can totally understand the obsessive nature - our vehicles get their tyres rotated every 5000km. I am just more of the adage that if you borrow a tool twice, you need your own and that if I can do it myself then I will. As a plus, while I'm under there I can check brakes, bearings, suspension and give things a quick clean too - a slightly different version of obsessive.

Thanks for answering the question though - I was starting to wonder if there was something Tesla had done to prevent owners from doing a rotation.

I think rotating tyres every 5000 km is a bit of overkill but each to their own.

Diagonal rotation isn't a big thing anymore as with with a lot of tyres it's not appropriate to change their direction of rotation.

I think checking wheel alignment is as or more important than rotation. All rotation acheives is equal wear on all tyres so that they all wear out together. Alignment helps ensure maximum mileage and better steering characteristics.

Tyre pressure is also important.

I can check the pressures my self and I do.

I can rotate the tyres myself but I general don't as I cannot do the wheel alignment and I get the rotation done during a wheel alignment.

I can't disagree with you there LOL. I am a vanilla M3 owner.

The latest update (2024.2.3) has “Speed Assist now leverages your car’s cameras to detect speed limit signs. This improves the accuracy of speed limit data on local roads and highways in select countries”.

That does seem to be case, as my car now picks up the LED Variable Speed Zone signs on Auckland motorways and temporary analogue signs as well. Up until this point I believe the car relied on what Google Maps told it and ignored any variation.

Yeah the new part of that note is that it sees the LED variable signs where it didn't previously. Your car should have been reading analogue temporary signs (such as at road works) with the camera as part of the initial launch of this feature in 2020.

At least in my case that update came in a bit earlier, as before today I was still on a 2023.x version (despite having had a couple of updates this year) and yet I noticed a few weeks back that it picked up the LED signs on Ngauranga Gorge and elsewhere in the lower NI (which it never had previously).

Also, as part of that same change I assume, the car now starts responding to marked speed changes a bit before the sign itself as opposed to right on the sign.
