Speaking of idiots...

Fatal crash: Elderly woman killed by truck that had a tablet obscuring the driver's view

A crash that claimed the life of an elderly woman may have been caused by a tablet on the windscreen that blocked the view of the truck driver.

The truck that struck the 74-year-old had an electronic tablet attached to the windscreen, about 8cm above the steering wheel, and was obscuring the delivery driver's vision.

I've seen some pretty dopey device placement on windshields, but this takes the cake. An old lady died needlessley.

Well, the muppets are back out on the road in full force in line with the end of the school holidays! Two cut offs this morning and two MEMEMEIMFIRSTIMFIRSTMEMEMEMEMEMEMEMEMEMEMEMMEMEIDRIVEABMWCANTYOUSEETHATISHOULDBEFIRST's needlessly speeding thru flowing areas overtaking cars and swerving all over the road this morning

Video shows pair hang out of windows on Auckland's Southern Motorway

This is how dickheads get themselves killed. I wouldn't miss them but I'm sure their friends and family will. Some poor bugger will have to clean them up.

We used to do that, but on a dirt road, with our elbows hooked over the roof rails while holding a rifle... those were the days

I've seen many GPS's placed right in the middle of the drivers view in Auckland. We share the roads with these idiots.

But hey it's only wrong if you get a ticket for it and there is slim to nil chance of that. I laughed when i heard they'd raised the cell-phone fines - it wouldn't matter if the fine was $100K for all the use that law is. A law isn't a law if it isn't enforced and empty threats encourage exploration of the stated boundaries. Today phones, tomorrow red lights the next day - worse.

Exactly what I was thinking there seems to be little to no enforcement of no mobile use on the roads.

Don't you mean: Exactly what I was thinking there seems to be no enforcement on the roads.

Should be charged with vehicular manslaughter ❗️

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

RNZ: The delivery company, Kamush Freight Limited, told the inquest it provided tablets to drivers "however ,the placement ... is left [to] the discretion of the drivers".

If these are provided with a suction cup then it's pretty obvious these will be stuck on a window. This may need to be addressed with some standards for vehicle mounting if not professional install. Difficult problem - ignoring it is no longer an option.

There's a tablet in the bottom right of the picture. I wonder if the driver requires two tablets or that's actually the tablet for the holder on the windscreen.

In any case it's hard to imagine any reason for choosing that mount position. Looks like all the news sites are using the same photo.

The mount on the windscreen looks to be empty, so I'd say the one on the dash normally goes in there.

The company should've at least given guidance on safe usage of device usage. OSH and all that. But really, what reason could drivers have for needing a device to be always in the line of sight while driving? Anything they need to look at should be done while stopped at the side of the road.

the one on the dash looks to be an eroad device or similar for driver monitoring

The drivers don't have freedom to stick things just anywhere on windscreens. The WoF/CoF manual specifies where stickers etc can be placed. That tablet was right in the middle of the so called critical area where you can't even have stone chips over a certain size.

No, just follow the law as it is now, we don't need another law, and certainly not a law that requires a licence to install a portable tablet/GPS phone holder

The real issue is ANY device placed ANYWHERE that distracts the drivers attention
he had 2 devices . I bet what caused the accident was he was distracted (not looking at the road), rather than had the view partially blocked

tablet, phone, gps, radio . We take our eyes off the road to look at these things , take our eyes off the road to enter info
into these things. I still see plenty of drivers looking down at their phones while driving .
