Dingbatt:

I see the new Model 3 Performance is now available to order in NZ. $87124 driveaway (white with no upspec). Estimated delivery June 2024.
Cheaper than previous generation and only about $1500 more than the Seal Performance. And way cheaper than performance offerings by other brands (excluding MG of course).

Definitely going for this. I have a 2022 M3P and my partner a 2021 M3 SR+ and both love our cars. Though I read that the Shanghai manufactured highland M3P's aren't as fast as their Fremont manufactured siblings, like 510HP vs 460HP and a slightly smaller battery made by LG instead of the Panasonic ones used at Fremont.

It's really only a problem if you plan to turn your car over within a year or two, or have borrowed heavily to buy it, then who ever lent you the money might be sweating if you default.

Or perhaps if you have a capricious spouse. This poor guy is at best in for a $10k drop having barely driven it off the dealership:

There's close to zero price difference between new base spec M3 and MY...that surprised me. The M3 has a little more range and performance but if you have a family the MY offers a lot more utility.

But that’s the pre-Juniper MY vs the Highland M3 - if I was in the market for a MY I’d most likely hang out to see what the facelift brings rather than buy now.

True - but no MY facelift expected in 2024...

You’re totally right about the MY being a more family-friendly car; the M3 was never an option for us due to its size/config, while the MY’s tardis-like qualities allows us to take such ‘necessities’ as espresso machine and grinder with us on holiday!

But if I didn’t need that extra rear legroom and larger boot I’d totally go for even the original M3 over the current MY - better looks, handling, efficiency… and now with the Highland update adding a greater level of sophistication and better looks the M3 is even more appealing.

i have a 2019 model 3 and thinking to get a power trunk retrofit.

Does anyone know any professional installer in Auckland and how much it might cost?

Thanks

How much more legroom in the MY over the new M3?

I would wait just a bit longer. There's an official retrofit from Tesla in the US that retrofits the powered boot lid from the 2024 refresh (so, dual powered struts) for those cars that have no powered boot lid. I would be surprised if Tesla NZ doesn't start offering it here as well.

Installed update 2024.14.3. Quite a big update with changes to the UI (version v12 apparently) particularly with the ability to shrink the navigation display and expand the “situation display” (to virtually full screen). I’ve only tried this in the garage but might be useful in motorway driving if it displays what’s around you. Also increases the size of the media playback controls and it feels like the speed display is slightly bigger.

Wiper speed controls now available (when wipers activated) on the left scroll wheel on the roller rather than a sideways click.

Speed camera chime and average speed zone functions as well as traffic and rerouting options in Nav (premium required).

Spotify synching and playback improvements.

Obraik presaged this update, but now it’s here. It’s almost like a the christmas update we didn’t get last year. Be interesting to try in an actual drive later.

It seems to be showing me far more other cars on the screen after the update, to the point that is annoying.

Also the relocation of the power bar to the side makes it basically invisible when its in day mode as the black line blends in with the side of the screen. Only see it when regening until it shifts to night mode.

Seems to have fixed the issue with Tidal where it would show an old daily mix when you tapped the playing album art, it now opens a play queue which is correct.

This is one of the first updates that my 2019 car will not be getting the big headline feature of the update...the UI refresh is only for cars with an AMD Ryzen based MCU. Those of us with the older Intel Atom MCU's will still get the other stuff, but no fancy new UI.

I don't think anyone should be surprised by this though...the Intel MCU's are around 7 years old at this point (even if the car is newer). Even Tesla can't avoid the limitations of older hardware

Just back from a drive.

Tried the expanded Situation Display (SD). It seems to provide a lot more of the surroundings and slightly larger images. It is also quite distracting, seeing things moving on the screen with peripheral vision. The amount of objects it misidentified was interesting. I am wondering if in the traditional layout (map and SD) whether the SD is fractionally wider than it used to be? Has the display always shown the car in front’s indicator, or is that new?

The display for current speed limit, TACC speed and status moves from the left of the SD to underneath the Speed display in expanded mode. And then is pushed down the screen when the blind spot image pops on. Quite poor HMI* design practice to have something you want to register at a glance keep moving around the screen.

I agree about the energy bar. If I hadn’t seen richms’ post above I would have thought it had been removed. The energy bar is shown on my aftermarket HUD anyway.

*Human Machine Interface. Or is it just called GUI design these days?

I just watched a video about an aftermarket retrofit for stalks on the Model 3 Highland (also Model S and X). early days, but I was wondering how long it would take for someone to produce this. Early days but I'll watch with interest when someone fits this.

Its interesting that for most cars aftermarket addons are for looks or performance, but for Teslas it is to restore functions.

I see in today’s NZHerald, the Ponsonby Rd showroom is closing on 13 May. It also included the new Tesla site at Westgate, but not when it’s opening. By the look of the artist’s impression it is tucked in below Mitre10 Mega and behind the Kia dealer. Funny thing is my wife told me about Tesla at Westgate months ago. Not sure where she got the info.

I’m amused by the report’s comment that it is “20 km further for people to travel”. Well not for me, it is literally 5 minutes away (depending on Costco traffic). Also amusing is the comment about having to travel on the often congested North Western Motorway. Never mind it being more convenient for North Shore owners. As if travelling into Ponsonby didn’t have its own challenges, let alone find somewhere to park. If you’re out East or South, go to Southern Service Centre in Mangere. That’s where I went to test drive the M3 Highland, so much easier than Ponsonby.
