Dingbatt:

I see in today’s NZHerald, the Ponsonby Rd showroom is closing on 13 May. It also included the new Tesla site at Westgate, but not when it’s opening. By the look of the artist’s impression it is tucked in below Mitre10 Mega and behind the Kia dealer. Funny thing is my wife told me about Tesla at Westgate months ago. Not sure where she got the info.

I’m amused by the report’s comment that it is “20 km further for people to travel”. Well not for me, it is literally 5 minutes away (depending on Costco traffic). Also amusing is the comment about having to travel on the often congested North Western Motorway. Never mind it being more convenient for North Shore owners. As if travelling into Ponsonby didn’t have its own challenges, let alone find somewhere to park. If you’re out East or South, go to Southern Service Centre in Mangere. That’s where I went to test drive the M3 Highland, so much easier than Ponsonby.

IMHO a downtown car dealer is a PITA, especially if you have to drive there, sites are usually small and have limited parking,

I Think Tesla are beginning to appreciate that they are a Car company, and now that they are past the "Tech-bro-early adopters", many customers actually want to "kick the tyres" on something they will plonk down $70+K on

Also as they move to larger sales volumes, they will need more space too.

Even when I got my Model 3 at the end of 2019 and I was living in Auckland it was a PITA to get into the K Rd SC. If you happened to arrive while the service bays were full then there was generally no on street parking so you'd have to circle the block a bit until one of the bays freed up. I imagine now with significantly more Tesla's on the road that problem is even worse. The Westgate store was announced at the end of last year (with this paywalled Herald article)

One thing I can't see is whether the Westgate centre is just a showroom or also a service centre? It's a bit of a trek from Warkworth to the Kirkbride Rd site - and even more so to get back to the CBD after you drop the car off, and then back again to pick it up.

In the render it looks looks far to large to just be a showroom.

Plans for the new Tesla Westgate, as shown on NZRPG's site. The store will be near the existing Mitre 10 Mega.

Ah, that’s what my wife would have seen.

So glad IKEA decided to go elsewhere. Traffic management around there is a shambles as it is.

As far as what’s going onto the Tesla site, it’s a pretty big footprint. So if the Kirkbride Rd site is anything to go by, I’m assuming it will be everything. Showroom, service, warehousing and possibly a delivery point.

Updated to 2024.14.7

It was a roll up in my case of 14.5 and 14.7 updates. 14.7 was a bug fix but 14.5 was the addition of “Tesla Vision Park Assist”.

It is selectable in settings, so I tried it in the local shopping centre carpark. I must say it’s quite impressive how it displays the cars as wobbly blobs approximating their shape. But it didn’t instil much confidence in me so I reverted to the legacy parking display using the USS, that thankfully, my car still has.

Tesla Vision Park Assist appears to me to be another case of Tesla engineers doing a “look at we we’ve done”. I might have more faith in it if it still used USS (if fitted) and had a camera in the front bumper.

A lot of other manufacturers just use a superior 360 birds-eye camera display and USS.

I agree that a 360 camera would be good, but it occurs to me that what they have done with the new parking feature is a step along the path of actually 'recognising' those 'blobs' and working out what they are. A 360 image is just an image. With more work from Tesla, those shapes may be understood by the car for what they really are - it might be exciting to see what they can do with that.

What they may be doing is using us for data gathering and beta testing to provide a reliable system for their robotaxi.

Tesla has already started to leave Intel processor cars behind with the “Spring” (Autumn in our case) update. I doubt HW3 cars will be capable of the level you describe. They aren’t even leveraging the equipment (USS and radar) that ‘legacy’ models have. As I understand it, they have decided inputs from those sensors are noise. As an experiment, I took a tape measure and did some parking trials. The vision system over estimated the distance to objects by 50-100% when compared to USS and was worst in the front. The only time it was superior was backing down my driveway, where it showed the edge of our concrete in relation to the lawn. But even in that case, a quick glance at the excellent rear and side camera displays allowed my brain to analyse how close I was to the lawn without referencing the wobbly edged image produced by Tesla Vision.

The main difference between a good 360 camera setup and Tesla Vision is the processing is done in your brain rather than in a chip.

Ultimately, I think Tesla wants systems that can be used by both human and machine. They also don't want to pay the licensing fees to use 360° park assist.

I see 2024.20.x is now starting to deploy (includes further improvements to the matrix headlights). My car is still stuck on 2024.8.9 so maybe mine will just skip ahead to this new version instead...

How do you get the matrix headlights to do their thing? Mine only seem to come on with autopilot and not when I flick the lever to get the brights.

Go into the Lights section of Settings and make sure you have turned on the new Adaptative High Beams. The blue symbol that indicates that the high beams are on should now have an "A" in them to indicate that they're in auto mode.

Yeah I get that when they are turning on by themselves in autopilot, but it seems the stalk just makes the go full blast.

So you're not seeing them cut out part of the light for oncoming vehicles?

Only when it automatically turns them on as part of autosteer or if I enable auto highbeams and it finally decides to use them which is between seldom and never.

Agreed, I am rural so high beams on a lot, after the latest update, in total darkness, no lights anywhere, and its still low beam. I have reverted to manual and got control back.
