Hi,

i am moving to Auckland from central Europe and i love mountain biking. Auckland weather is very rainy in the comparsion with central europe.

Could you recommend me some cycling jacket which is really waterproof ? I know that there is a
"cheap way" > raincoat, but that`s not so comfy.

Often is recommended Endura Stealth, Venturi, Rogelli Udine ...

> cost ~ 200 NZD

Good point, those brands do appear to be for the unpowered two wheel riders.

The OP does say mountain biking, so I think we can say push bike. I am interested as well. I did have a Kathmandu jacket but it was not breathable which I think is very important for mountain biking.

I'd invest in "Harden Up" brand.

For the human powered version, you can't beat Ground effect. Made down in Chch, designed by riders and if they have it in stock they usually deliver over night to your front door in NZ.

Ground Effect jackets look great when parked up outside a cafe...
However it's next to impossible to answer the question without knowing the sort of riding you're into.
Are you looking to go back country / jungle riding? Maybe venturing down to the South Island to hit up the mountain ranges through Central?
Or will it be day trips to RotoVegas to hit up the single track?
I've mountain biked for 19 years, worked in the bike industry... and IMHO for $200 you'll get an okay jacket, but you'll need to pick between waterproof or breathable - a jacket that does both won't exist at that price point.

I have a nice one from macpac, has a single layer gortex like fabric, was nearer to $300 though. I use it for all sorts, but including moutain biking, and i find it really the fabric really breathable, which is really important for long rides in the rain, so it doesnt turn into a sauna or force you do down the zip.

The riding here may not be quite as good as Europe, but there are some pretty special pockets around the place. I highly recommend the Kennet brothers guide book (http://www.kennett.co.nz/index.php/Books/ClassicNewZealandMountainBikeRides). Also make sure that you trip to Rotorua at some stage, its a must-do.

I have one that's an American brand - it's an animals name but I forget what it is. It's just a waterproof shell, cost me around $200. Go into some sports stores and try some on.

+1 For Ground Effect, found I have worn out the fabric over the years before anything else breaks, and their aftersales service is top notch too.
