Read the readers' comments at the bottom bit ...

is that true?

if tis true then the driving testing is truly nonsense!

cant help you , my test was a 10 minute drive around Henderson in the 70's and that was that. Hardly a stern test.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Yep life time licences which turned out not to be a lifetime licence.  Trust politicians, well actually no you cannot.

What about the little booklets where you had to paste in the renewal stickers?  You paid your money and you were good to go again, really another tax like motor vehicle registration.  These predated the waxy paper ones.

As for the current driving test, it seems you can fail for the most minor of things and what's important depends on the person conducting the test.  In some cases it sure seems to be a way to print money by continually failing candidates.

From some of the stories I've heard I'm surprised that it's taken so long for a testing officer to a assaulted.  In saying that, I'm not suggesting this sort of action is appropriate nor the assault currently in the news was the result of an injustice in the assessing of a driving test.

Lol, thats a pretty crap reason for why you can fail someone. The criteria says, car has to be up to WOF and have enough fuel. nothing says anything about a wet seat.

I have been the passenger with @TimA on a number of drives and nothing wrong with his driving, I actually forgot I was in the car so he could learn to drive and meet his learners licence conditions

Testing Officers can refuse to do the test (fail) if the vehicle condition is unhygenic.  They shouldn't have to sit in someone elses pigsty of  a car, I think that one is fair enough.  As for most of the others I would take with a grain of salt personally.   Overactive teenage imaginations with ears painted on IME.

Testing officers performance is monitored and pass/fail rates inconsistent with the rest of the country are investigated to ensure standards are being applied consistently.

Fact is the newer test is far more detailed, and the unprepared are finding that out the hard way. When they fail it's a big sob-story to mum/dad about how the testing officer was 'mean' and failed them for something really silly, when that is typically not the full story.

As with the quotes in the media article, very one-sided.

I had heard they were going to put cameras in the cars to avoid the he said/she said arguments and enable complaints to be reviewed fully.

Disclaimer...yes use to do this job in a long since past life.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

Would you be willing if you live in Auckland for a sum of money to come drive with me?
I failed twice. Dont want to sink another $80. Cop asked me the other day why i still had my learners. Explained about one being unfair judgement and another was the tester not paying attention when i actually did indicate, (Already had 1 error so they failed me for a second on not indicating when i did) So Mr. Coppa said have a good day and left..

Quoted from the comments on that article for truth.

"* Tom Young: "Could it be that those who have failed the tests and then blame the examiners have been unworthy of gaining a licence because of lack of theoretical or practical ability? Indeed are some of these failing the tests in that group of persons who expect things to be handed out on a silver plate without having earned the right. If that should be the case then I would congratulate the examiners in doing their job and keeping our roads a safer place.'' "

Long story, Wayne Kerr in car behind coasted up my rear in 80 kph zone he doing 110 and honked on horn when i was getting up to speed, I was doing 75 by the time he was 20m off my rear. Failed because of unsafe maneuver. Other one was i apparently forgot to indicate when i did, Plus i made an error before by slightly cutting a corner but 2 errors in part one so failed.

Tim thinks it's OK to light up a fag and call his Giganaire friends at the same time, while taking the test.
