I'm looking at buying a Mk IV VW Golf. Just wondering where you guys get them serviced and if there is anything else you would suggest I should look at.

FYI I'm not interested in hearing that I shouldn't be buying a European car - I know but I want something fun to play with :)

Can't help you with the specifics of your car, but I can recommend a very good European repair place for when you will inevitably need it, and that is Qualitat.

I've just been taking my VW to Tristam in Glenfield, but pricy though and have to do it again tomorrow for the common suspension clunk / sway bar bushing issue.

Repairs have cost a LOT, but its still been my most enjoyable car to drive

save up a few more pennies and look at a mk5 golf - way better than any mk3/4 !

This comes to mind when it comes to servicing. But wouldn't you rather get a GTi? I don't have any problems with European cars, they are great to drive and the seats are more comfortable, I just wouldn't buy one that is outside it's waranty period, due to costs. Have had several Europeans and any fix to it was 1k plus. Even when dashboard lights needed replacing (which shouldn't really fail anyway), it was another 1k job. But if money is not an issue, and you don't have dependants, then go for it. But I would look for something newer and probably more reliable, as you don't want it to be in the shop, when you want to drive it.

If you can't afford a brand new European Car, you DEFINITELY can't afford a second hand one. :)

I'd echo that if you can get to the MK5 over a 3/4 then you SHOULD do that. I like GTi's but I wouldn't pay the extra from a 3/4 to a GTI if you could get a 5 price wise.

If you want something awesome, I have an Audi S4 Avant v8 for sale :)

THAT is a drivers car.

Yeah a Mark 5 isn't really in the budget once I add running costs/repairs. I'm going in eyes wide open, hence my comment in OP.
