Im sick of rushing to get things done in the time I have rented a trailer for. There are some 8x5' cage trailers that seem to go for 1400 or so regually.

Anyone owned one and know how good they are? Not using for heavy stuff, just moving things between houses etc.

I can't help with trailers, but I can say I've bought greenhouse window openers from them, one was faulty, their service was excellent. Window opener quality is average, decent enough but nothing spectacular. I'd buy from them.

Don't know anything about the ones you refer to. However have heard of some companies that import from china and the steel is thin. So I would suggest checking it out. My last one was caged was purchased from a company in Livin, and it cost a lot, as it was made in NZ and was heavy duty. You do get what you pay for.

Ideally I would like something a bit lighter than the absurdly heavy ones that are used as the rental ones at service stations, because pushing those around on your own is quite a challenge sometimes.

Im more worried about wheel bearing being crap, insufficient bracing so it goes out of square etc which aren't really things I can assess myself by looking at one.

We do heaps of trailer WOF's and repairs and I wouldn't touch one of those cheap trailers. As said above, you get what you pay for.

i used one on the weekend, they are OK for small jobs and if you budget it to last 3-5 years and can justify it, then go for it.
It wont be round much after 5 though, frame is only lightly galv and the hubs are cheapo's

Looks like a good brand trailer like Elite or Briford goes for around $3k for a caged 8x5' - might be a better bet given they will stick around longer.

Alternatively if you want to keep costs down and are happy with something that might die in 5 years, then maybe an old homebuilt one from trade me would be better

A pneumatic jockey wheel might help you in moving it around yourself?

Its mainly the spinning it around on a slope by the house that is a problem, There is a big Z in the driveway which is really hard to reverse a trailer thru. Even the guys who do it for a living wont deal with it. I dont think a jockey wheel will help with that.

I would be parking it undercover so that should help with the rust I would expect. Its mainly the story a few years back with some cheap import trailers with the wheels dropping off that has me worried that would happen with me.

Also whats the deal with getting insurance on a trailer, since I wouldnt be renting it to pay the small amount they charge to get insurance.

Most car policies have trailer cover as part of them, have a look at your policy specifically.

Should note, the one I used does have larger wheel studs - Forgot to add that, one broke a few months back.

Why skimp on quality with a trailer, remember there is a chance of you towing it at 80kph and I sure as heck don't want to be behind a cheap full laden trailer.

Chinese steel is known to be low grade. I've heard of buildings that have failed consent due to poor grade steel.

I bought a new galv 8x4 Briford a couple of years ago (funny, it's the only thing I have to get 12 month WOFs!).

Have not regretted it. I made a cage from wood for carrying firewood, much cheaper than the cages.

Aren't the Elites only assembled in NZ?
