Hi All,

I am looking to replace a factory head unit in a VW Polo 2002 with a newer JVC head unit as a christmas present (i.e. I need to do this before Christmas in 3 days time).

To do this I need to track down some removal keys, to remove the unit from the dash.

I ordered some removal keys about a week ago from ebay and was expecting them to arrive today, however they have been delayed and are unlikely to arrive before the end of the year now.

Today I have been calling around, trying to track down somewhere in NZ that I can buy these removal keys. So far I have not had any luck.

Does anyone here know of a place to buy removal keys for a VW Polo in NZ.

This is the closest thing to a solution that I can find right now:
http://www.supercheapauto.co.nz/online-store/products/SCA-Tool-Set-Radio-Removal-36-Piece.aspx?pid=342009#Recommendations

But rather than spending all of that money on keys for every make and model I only really need something like this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/160787669623?_trksid=p2060778.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Thanks in advance for the help!

Do you need the keys?

(sorry, tried to embed, just got an error).

EDIT: My Bad sorry - dodn't read your post correctly - 2002 Polos it appears you need some sort of Keys.

Is there an installer near you - they should pop it out for you?

Usually the "key" doesn't need to be that shape, all it needs to do is un clip the small latches that hold the head unit in place, so you just need something flat that fits in the hole, like a very small flat blade screw driver for example. You could also try the likes of Installer Services to see if they could just un clip the old one for you. It takes about 5 seconds.

trig42: You are right, I could probably do the install without the keys. However doing it with the keys would be much cleaner and easier. Another thing to note is that the 2002 model looks much harder to pull apart than the model in the video. Thanks for the heads up though! Appreciate it.

lxsw20: I have seen some tutorials online showing how to make removal keys out of old credit cards, I think this seems like a pretty viable option. The only thing is that pulling the old unit out, could become a problem seeing as there is no latching mechanism on a home made key. I will definitely give this a go and get back to you though.

Some enterprising dude removed my wifes car stereo for her while it was parked at the railway station, they just used a crowbar and what looked like a large lump of concrete. Have you tried those tools yet? Works pretty well although she did need a entire new dashboard.

For all the time and trouble, I would just pop into the dealer or an audio installer, flick them $20 and a box of the finest brew and either use their keys or get them to remove it for you.

Did the new head unit not come with some generic keys in the box? I seem to recall mine did where they slid down each side of the old unit and were simply pulled back to remove it

You're not on Atlantis anymore, Duncan Idaho.
