Trademe gets the volume of views, I know, and it is hard to top that, but it just cost me $90 or so to list a car which I am only asking 2 grand for. Is there a better place to list cars that doesn't cost as much?

autotrader is a big car site, I'm not sure how they compare with Trademe though in terms of views. They charge "from $20".

i'm pretty sure it's way cheaper than $90 to list at 2 grand.

and no trademe has largest volume.

but hey at 2 grand you could try facebook, supermarket, universities etc ... depending on how fast you want to sell - 2nd hand cars are a pain in the bum to move ... !

Its $48 to list and then if you want any of the features it stacks up real quick. Asked $2200 which is fine and have had a stack of responses, so it is worth it in the end, but still nearly $100 to list a car is a significant up front hit to have to pay.Oh well, that is the joys of services without competition.

Yep, I hate selling cars, it sucks. I'm too nice and tend to ask too little instead of trying to fight for every last cent out of one. Last one I sold was a Honda Logo that got rust in the roof and also someone backed into it in our culdesac. I bodged it up and sold it for like $1200. Had a guy come and buy it half an hour after listing. I saw it on trademe a week later polished up, asking for another $500 over what I sold it for and listed as having one previous female owner

Facebook is definitely the way to go if you don't want to spend any money.

There are pages dedicated to cars selling for $2,000 or less, regional vehicle trading and trading general items.

don't be too quick on that one. if there are 100,000 used cars on trademe .. umm also HUGE stock!

it is possible the people that want a $2,000 car will be lurking on the facebook car sales thread

I have found all sales and purchases of cars I have done on Trademe to be straight forward, quick and easy.

For the $50 it is they actually offer pretty reasonable value.

And I won't buy anything off Facebook, nor will most people I know.

Trade me would be the place, big audience, good service, reasonable charges.

You could try the parking on the road with a for sale sign, see that a lot down this way

Are you sure?

for an auction is $39 + 1.95% of success fee up to a max of $49, so on $2000 that's another 39 bringing the total to $78
for a classified its a flat fee of $59 for asking prices $1,500-$10,000
you get 20 photos and a gallery listing for that price untill you sell so you can just list again and again till it sells

so either way not $90 as you have stated unless you have decided to include extras, which you then cant complain about.

why you would want any additional fees on a $2000 car is beyond me, i would say the lower end of the price range is where they get the most bidders/people buying as people want cheap daily drivers.

if your car is price well it will advertise its self

But I did include extras and said I did, sorry for believing their hype that it improves sales. It is not cheap to list on Trademe, but it is still the biggest market in NZ. Thus far after 2 days of listings, I have 400 views, 30 watchers and 10+ direct contacts. So it is worth it in the end. I just wondered if there was a better place to list a car that didn't cost so much up front.

The answer is no, there isn't a better place to list but there are cheaper places to list.
