So I'm looking to get a full car tint for my/our sedan. I know that there is a 35% VLT requirement and you cannot tint the windscreen except for the top 100mm.

Where would be the best place to fully tint my car windows please? Price also taken into account. I'm located in West Auckland.

Thanks in advance!

We've used the Wairau Rd branch of http://www.tintacar.co.nz/ a couple of times in the past with excellent results. Pretty sure they have a branch in Henderson, but haven't used their services.

Thanks! Have you had window tints done by them? I'm guessing so.. How much did it cost you? I was looking at the Carbon Supreme, and by the looks of things, sounds like it will be pretty expensive!

Just emailed them for a quote.

Thanks! I see they have a lot of window tint options. Which one/s did you use that produced optimum results? And how much did it cost you? Are their films made by 3M?

I honestly don't remember what it was called, but have always used premium options. Always used discounts from shows like Big Boys Toys etc to get the price down. It's been quite a few years since I used them. I used someone different for the last tint work and am not as happy with the result. Won't name names, but it was a mobile service and was done in my garage at home.

Beware of cheap films!  They will fade and turn purple or pink in 24 months or less.

Sound Around are fantastic and their tinters use the good stuff.  The place I work at uses A1 tinting.  He also uses very high quality film and will come to you.

Good luck!

Thanks! I see A1 Tinting use Johnson Window Films. I wonder which one is better: Johnson Window Films or 3M

Looking at their specs, I think 3M window films (especially the 3M Crystalline Automotive Film) are better?

I've had two of my cars done by Naveen at A1 Tinting.  Both times he used 3M, and was about $200-250. No crappy purple tints, he comes to you, takes around an hour. Couldn't recommend more.

Unless I have misunderstood the rules, this tint surely wouldn't pass WOF?

Thanks! Do you know what type of 3M it was? I'm quite liking the previously mentioned 3M Crystalline Automotive Film. Seems to have the highest rating of blocking UV rays, and glares etc.

Will email them for a quote as well.

Is the windscreen tinted as well? If so, I'd agree with you. Although I heard that if it was factory tinted overseas then imported to NZ, it would have to be compiled to NZ standards.

Or were you referring that the back windows looks like they are more than 35% VLT?

I am no expert, but looks like the driver and passanger front windows might be tinted too much, there is a strick rule for that as well?

Most factory tinted would be allowed, from what I understand. So the nice dark tinting (that would not be allowed here in NZ if retrofitted) on my Avensis is allowed here because it came like it from the factory.

But now we are talking about retrofitting, and the windows look terribly dark on some of the example cars I think. (Again, not an expert on the laws or how to tell how tinted something is).

Front side windows must have a VLT not less than 35% after applying an overlay.

Correct about the 100mm from top of front window and not passed the sun visors. The front is not allowed a VLT less than 70%. I don't think you're allowed to add an overlay to a front window though even if it's VLT is higher. Only as already mentioned to within 100mm of the top of the window, and not below the sun visor.

I think the rest of the rear and side windows for a passenger car is also not less than 35%.

My Stagea's glass doesn't look tinted, but it already has a low VLT of about 70 and a greenish tint to them.

Just make sure where ever you take it, that they have a VLT measuring device so it's not estimated in any way.

Make sure they don't tint a rear window over a high stop lamp too. Overlays can cause cause glare for a stop lamp, it's effectively adding a third layer to the glass (most windows are 2 layer laminate) which distorts light bouncing between each layer more and more. I ran in to problems with this when installing a heads up display on conventional windows.

edit: If you want really dark after-market overlays you need a class MC vehicle.  Behind the drivers door can be anything in a 4x4 off road vehicle.
