Excuse the rant but I've always renewed my license online using my American Express card. Logged on tonight to renew and its no longer an option.

Sigh, so annoyed right now :(

I have an AMEX for work use and sometimes have to use my personal VISA card because not everyone takes AMEX.

AMEX used to have a higher charge, so I suppose that is why some retailers won't take it.

Why should they have to accept it?

The problem is they used to but now they dont. Im quite aware of charges, interchange blah, blah but the point is they have quite happily accepted it for the last 5 years but now they dont.

The NZTA presumably stopped accepting AMEX for the usual reason - AMEX charges the vendor a higher fee than other cards.

I thought they tacked on a "convienence fee" for paying stuff so why should they care what the fees are?

Not entirely true. Depending on your relationship wih your banker or know of people in the industry, ask them to show you a schedule of the inter change fees. Visa is preferred because it is one standard rate across all card types regardless of debit/credit. The. Amex with a higher fee. However worst offender is MasterCard with variable fees based on card and tier. Some world and world elite cards carry higher fees to the merchant. And sometimes are even higher than Amex

If anything Amex needs to shake off the sour perception that their fees are higher, which are true at times only
