Recently got an Bluetooth adaptor for my cars OBD2 port. Works fine with Torque and my Note 3.

I did however notice that when the adaptor is connected the engine light on my dash stays lit.

Is this normal? Google is no help as searching for "OBD engine light" just brings back loads of threads of people trying to clear error codes via OBD.

Is it a top notch adapter, or a cheapie? Have used a cheap adapter/Torque/Note 3 setup on my Holden, but didn't have any lights or other issues with it. Some cheapies have been known to cause issues apparently.

Yeah its a cheapie. That could well be the issue. I was more wanting to know if the behaviour is normal (ie plug anything into the port and the light comes on).

I've got a couple friends who use Torque\ODB2 and I haven't heard them mention this problem.

yeah, i've adapter and used it. nothing was wrong apart from impreza 2006 JDM and OBDII + weird subaru's protocol is no go for any of the readings :(

Could be vehicle specific. What's the make/model of your car?

I have an obd2 adaptor and a toyota JDM, couldn't get many results so stopped using it.

would appreciate any help if someone is interested in helping me.

2005 Mitsubishi Colt.

There are no fault codes. If I unplug the adaptor the light goes off! Will try it on our other car.

I think it depends on the car. For instance I get RPM off my Colt but not fuel (fuel gauge is analog on the dash).

I was in a similar situation. My Holden Astra City had a faulty temperature gauge and often read zero, but torque reported the correct operating temperature, so I knew it wasn't really something I should worry about.

I use torque all the time with my 97 Toyota Caldina. For those not getting many results, sometimes you need a specific string of keys and parameters for the software to properly communicate with certain ECUs. With torque, to enter the custom parameters you needed the paid version. Others are plug and play and work with the free version.

TL;DR: If you are having trouble with Torque, you probably need the paid version.

If you are thinking about getting an OBD interface, get the bluetooth one. I could just leave mine plugged in to the socket underneath the trim of my car and connect to it when something happened right away. Much more convinient.

If you're thinking of getting one of the dirt cheap Bluetooth units, check out any feedback from the supplier first. Mine cost me about $12-$14 (bought it about 18 months ago) and is fine, but others that look very similar from different suppliers have issues or cause problems with the vehicle when connected (according to feedback I read at the time).

I plan on looking at a slightly higher quality unit one day, but not at the top of the priority list (around the $200ish mark)

I had quite a bit of hassle with that too - the US of course doesn't get ex-Japan domestic imports, so the problem isn't a big thing on US forums.

As DravidDavid mentioned, you can include custom connection settings in the paid version. It was a few years ago, but I do have the following JDM connection info I found somewhere online:

.. to connect to JDM Toyotas you will need to input the below in the ELM 327 custom configuration string in profile:

This is the line for most JDM toyotas there are some other lines for some other toyotas:
