My car is due for  WOF.  The passengers and rear window washers are blocked.  The problem is somewhere in the tubeing not in the nozzles.

It's going to be quite job to fix them.  More of a weekend job but I need to get the WOF sooner than that.

Does anyone know if they have to work for a WOF?

The transport agency site is unclear what is required

The drivers side work fine.

Yes they have to work in my experience.

Had rats chew on my mothers car causing the washer lines to leak, WOF guy said it'd be a fail - out came the gaffer tape.

Passed no problem after that.

I suspect the front one will likely fail it

The rear one not so much

https://vehicleinspection.nzta.govt.nz/virms/in-service-wof-and-cof/general/vision/windscreen-wipe-wash

Reasons for rejection

5 Vision

5-3 Windscreen wipe and wash

Windscreen wash system

11. A windscreen wash nozzle does not discharge washer liquid directly onto the windscreen.

its very clear:

Point 11

also in the summary

Performance

6. The equipment fitted must be capable of keeping an adequate area of the windscreen clean and clear so that the vehicle may be operated safely under all reasonably foreseeable conditions.

Seems to depend on who you goto.

I've been tested and had dirty windows, and instead of squirting a bit on first, just pulled wiper lever and smeared it more.

Sort of grey

Windscreen wash and wipe systems The law says that a vehicle's windscreen wash and wipe systems must keep the windscreen clean and clear enough for the driver to be able to drive safely at all times and under all weather conditions.

So in rain, its likely to clean itself anyway :P

(I also went 2 yrs with my rear one not getting any water due to pinched feed tube.. fail? nope)

yes but read the in service performance requirements, if its fitted with nozzles they have to work

Take your vehicle into VTNZ to get your WoF. If they do not test it, then it is a pass. If it fails, then you have 28 days to repair the faults.
You are unlikely to get a ticket, but if you do, you may get compliance as you can prove you are trying to get your WoF.

I must say, that I have never noticed them test mine.

I failed on a strange subject like this on saturday.. a weak horn! :( Car is outside atm and since crash repair replaced 2nd airhorn trumpet with the same size and not different note it seems the Compressor doesn't like it, or is getting condensation in it. Sounds pathetic early in the morn (when I went to get it done!)

I thought it wasn't too bad.. at least its not INYERFACE loud anymore :P

As previously referenced, the Vehicle Inspection Requirements Manual (VIRM) is the standard all WOF stations must adhere to.  It is crystal clear that the water nozzles must operate or that is a criteria for a fail.

As for the horn, here is what it says about the fail criteria, probably failed on a judgement call on the last point

Performance 3. The horn does not operate when activated. 4. The horn operates when not activated. 5. The sound from the horn is not steady and continuous, eg the horn plays a tune. 6. The horn is not audible at a distance of 100 m.

Sorry, you will have to un-weld the doors and replace the side windows as well ;-)

They tested the windscreen washers and passed the car.

It has two pairs of windscreen washers and they are reasonably high volume, one pair effectively washes both sides once the wipers get going.

Not that it's relevant any more, but...

1. You must have some (unspecified) windscreen wash system.
2. Any nozzles you have must squirt onto the windscreen.
3. Modifying the wash system (as opposed to the wipe system) is not precluded.

I don't see any reason why you couldn't remove the non-working nozzle and, so long as there is still at least one working nozzle, meet the standard and pass.

Not that this is necessarily a good idea, just that the law is (as always) an ass.
