I bought the cheapest wifi and bluetooth ones on aliexpress, and with torque or any of the apps they just sit there going thru a list of protocols before declaring that no ecu was found.

has anyone got something that they have working on a 2000 vintage toyota?

The BT one is a ELM327 v2.1 which some places say is a bad clone that doesnt work, the wifi one is also an elm327 but no version came up that I can rememner, and I dont really want wifi because android is stupid and stops using 4G when it has a wifi connection to nothing.

With the cheapest ones, I'm pretty sure they will waste battery when plugged in to the OBD car port.

Thats fine. It wont go more than a few days between drives so its not going to take a lot out of it over that time.

Hi,

ELM327 does not work with Toyota protocol.

For OBD-II type scan in Toyota you would need Mangust or Mini-VCI cable (Pathtru protocol) and Techstream Software.

If it is ODB-I under the hood - there is also a way of getting some data - I can make adapter cable for those vintage cars and have software.

If you are in Auckland and in desperate need to scan your Toyota - I may be able to help.

I'm pretty sure an MR2 doesn't talk OBD2 -- you're probably better off asking over at mr2.org.nz though.

Hmm, thats unfortunate. Im guessing we got a different one to the USA in that case because there are people on the forums there saying its sucessful. but there are also loads of things saying the version of the elm327 I have is a piece of junk clone that doesnt work.

I even had the problem that they all have with the ABS light flashing till I pulled out one of the pins on the connector.

Is it an ex-Japan domestic model? I know that they need different settings in Torque etc - I found the default settings wouldn't work with a five-year old Jap import. Not sure anymore what you would need to put in, but I previously posted this info.

I know some cars have an OBDII socket but are not OBDII I think they call it OBDI and 1/2.  MY 2003 VY Commodore has the OBDII socket but won't support and OBDII device.

Yes it is.

I will give that a shot when I have time to buy torque and give it a try in the refund window with no chance of interuptions from needy people.
