Maybe it's just people on my route to work, but I see quite a few cars where the rear parcel shelves are stuffed with toys and the rear-view mirror has most the contents of a cathedral dangling from them!

How do these people see out the windows to drive ?  Or is the divine helping them out ? :-)

they dont.

its a huge distraction having things over your dash that can move and hanging from your rear view mirror.

the rear parcel tray thing isnt too much of an issue for me as if you drive a van/small truck etc you generally cant see out it either. so its no different for cars.

How often do you really use rear view mirror?

You don't really need rear view mirror. You can use the side mirror to see the back.

Think about:
1. Trailer - this rear view is next to useless
2. Car with limited rear screen - my last ix35, it is pretty limited
3. SUV with tyre right at the back. You can probably utilize less than 20% of the rear screen.

So, no, it is not the divine that help them. It is the experience and correct way to drive.

The vast majority of people never use the rear view mirror anyway which is why they don't move over for emergency services vehicles or the line of traffic building up behind them.

If your car was manufactured before 2000 you don't even need a rear view mirror, only a right hand one. Cars newer than that required a rear view plus a right hand side mirror. There are a lot of people who rely solely on their mirrors, however on most cars the mirrors leave large blind spots.

you make do with what you have. if you drive a 4WD/truck/bus you don't see much either.

I use that sort of thing as an indicator of how much skill and attention the driver of the vehicle is likely to demonstrate and act accordingly....

Here is a good example I saw today. They will need to have xray vision to see when those mattresses inevitably slither off the back in a few hours time!
