I have a full class 1 (car) license. It is due for it's 10 year renewal 12/5/15.

I was wanting to get a class 6 (motorbike) learner license at the same time, but from what I read, these are only valid for 5 years.

Will doing this have the effect of shortening my class 1 license to 5 years as well?

yes because its on the same document

the difference is the class 1 is a 10 year renewal, which includes a new photo

the class 6 is an expiry, so if after 5 years you dont go to your restricted the class 6 expires and you will get a new license with just your class 1 on it, weather its got the remaining 5 years on it or it resets the 10 year cycle i dont know

And getting a full Class 6 doesn't reset the counter either. My licence still expired 10 years after I got my full Class 1. 6F was a few years after that.

Not true - according to the new licenses, you can have multiple expiration dates. If a class or endorsement expires, you don't get a new license issued.

NZDL Back

However, when I got my Class 4F recently, it renewed my Class 1 and Class 2 at the same time.

multiple expiration dates of endorsements, not of the actual license classes, the picture shows that all the 1-6 classes share the same date.

you dont require an endorsement to drive any of the classes of license, you require it to do things above and beyond the basic 1-6 class.

That picture is a sample, all of those are full licences, I believe Learners and Restricted are different

I will call NZTA tomorrow and post the answer up here.

One important thing to note is that you get a Learners motorcycle license, you will get a blue license card with "Learner" emblazoned on it.  The card is issued with the blazon of your lowest license class, not your highest.  This can cause confusion.

Not true for Truck Licenses.
Mine stayed Green when I got my 2L and my 4L

Answer:

I have contacted NZTA and been advised what 'cisconz' said. They said I will be issued a license with a 5 year expiry for class 6 and a 10 year expiry for class 1.

No, it just shows on the license 2 expiry dates, unless you wish to renew the expired portion, you keep the same card, just you are no longer able to drive a motorbike.

Only if I want to keep the class 6. I think it's designed to push people into getting their full license.

so you end up with a blue license (L) with an expired class 6 license but a still valid class 1 on it? so you can still use it after the class 6 expires?

if that is the case that is stupid

It doesn't bother me. I only care about what the license grants, not what it looks like.

Yes that is correct, however after the 10 years, you would renew just class 1 and it would be back to Green.
Or you could pay the $50 and renew early.
