Ok doke

Went to install Headunit in SWMBOs car, noticed that the the left font speakers weren't working (before I started the install) there is a left front door speaker and one that is in the pillar thing above the glove box, neither were working, I checked the wiring (behind the headunit) visually when i put the new headunit (in just used an ISO adapter), but it all seemed hunky dory, so put the new head unit in and evrything except those front left speakers worked, so before I pull the door panel off, is there an easy way to find where the fault is

The car is a Nissan Avenir

If I read what you've said correctly, it sounds like the setup is mid in the door with a tweeter on the pillar?

If so, have a hunt between the head unit and the door (follow the loom) and hopefully you'll find the crossover box. Should be just behind the kick panel in the foot well, or just above the glove box. Picking there's an issue at the crossover.

It may also be in the door itself!

i would suspect that the fault would either be behind the speaker or where it goes from the car to into the door, the bit that moves when the door opens/closes.

Whoops

I knew i forgot something, this is wired into the aerial, is it

a) some sort of aerial amp
b) A band expander thingie

And what will be the effect of leaving it, now that i have put in an NZ headunit

I'd have a look around the door hinge for issues. It's possible the speaker cable goes into the door, the has a basic x-over then back to the tweeter.

The simple, easy and efficient way to check where the fault is, without powering anything. Also use this to phase (check polarity) bass spekers (otherwise if not phased - you'll experience loss in the output at the lower range):

- Use 1.5 V battery (AAA, AA will do).
- Disconnect wires from the amplifier/sound sustem which are going to the speakers.
- Connect/Disconnect temporarily quickly 1.5V to one pair, e.g. right speaker - you'll hear "click"/"unclick" sounds and observe bass speaker diafragm moving in certain direction - out or in (that is how you define polarity of speakers,.. mark the (+))
- Do that with left - if speaker is OK - your device has fault on the left channel. If not clicking - try to cut into wires somewhere closer to the door, where you think the wires may have been damaged or interconnected (no continuity).

If neither speaker (tweeter in the pillar or speaker in the door) are going, then the issue lies between the headunit and the crossover. The crossover is probably sitting in the door (Assuming, that like my Nissan Skyline, the tweeter is also in the door) and it is quite possible the wiring has disconnected from the crossover.

Just a question on the Nissan, what brand of stereo did you remove? Was it a Bose? If the car has Bose speakers, you may want to look at replacing them. they are only 1 ohm speakers, which mean they go loud, but if your amplifier isn't expecting a low resistance, they can cook it. Most after-market stereos want speakers in the 2-8 ohm range. Also, if it was a Bose, the speakers are probably wired to a Bose Amp in the boot (Mine was), it may be easier to track down your door speaker issue by running a new speaker cable.

As for the speakers i think they were replaced a couple of years ago after they developed a good awful hum (its SWMBOs car) so i am not 100% sure on that.

I'll get on to the rest of the testing later in the week.

Yes, you will get all its intermodulation mess that it creates in the process of downshifting stationsby 14 MHz, making things a lot worse than they would be without it.

Of cource, if you never use the radio then it will not matter.
