I've noticed that they've put these radar looking contraptions on the "Wrong Way" signs on the motorway off ramps. I'm fairly certain these are a recent addition, they've got big solar panels on them too.

I'm just curious, does anyone know if these are to detect people speeding down the offramp, or if they're to detect people going the wrong way up the off ramp?

I'll try get a photo of one ASAP. I've noticed them on many of the North Shore off ramps.

Looks like a solar panel to power LED lights. It probably has some form of detector to detect when a car is moving towards it, the wrong way from where it should be going.

Was thinking the same. Imagined it would do a warning type flash similar to the overheight vehicle signs or the traffic queues ahead ones.

"Two new pilot programs have been launched in Florida and Missouri that are intended to prevent wrong-way driving accidents. The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) has launched its pilot on the I-44 near St. Louis where there have been 25 crashes caused by drivers headed in the wrong direction in the last eight years. The new program involves the installation of solar-powered signs that are equipped with a sensor that identifies cars moving in the wrong direction down an exit ramp. Once a car has been detected, the signs will begin to flash and will also alert local law enforcement agencies"

They flash with bright red lights if you drive on to the off ramp (against the proper traffic direction).

I think the new terminology is Road Activated Warning Signs. In other words self power sufficient warning signs that only display when certain conditions are met, activated by the approaching vehicle. A new trend in smart signage rather than just having permanent signs up all over the show.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

Interesting! I wonder when they started implementing these, I wouldn't have thought it's such a big problem here. I Only started noticing them here on the North Shore a couple of weeks ago.

It's not, but efforts to prevent it happening in the first place is better than dealing with the consequences.
