I recently bought a Japanese imported car and had to replace the double DIN unit that was in there, as it didn't work (a common occurrence in imported vehicles for some reason).
After doing some research I settled on the Nakamichi NA1600, as it was a nice flush-mounting unit with no external knobs or shiny bits to detract from the interior of my car (2006 Volvo XC70)

I looked around and pricing seemed to vary from place to place but the cheapest I found was through Radio Waves in Auckland. $395.00 + fitting. www.radio-waves.co.nz
After speaking on the phone and doing some more research on the web, I was sufficiently confident enough to have this unit supplied and installed at home by Radio Waves.
One more call and he was there within a couple of hours.
He spent a couple of hours fitting (rewiring, trying to get the existing reverse camera hooked up - incompatible) and generally getting everything as it should be.
I have to say...I am impressed. Despite the amount of effort required and the amount of time he spent, I was charged $100.00 for fitting (as advertised) and was not only courteous, but professional to boot.
The unit itself is quite remarkable for a "budget" AV Double DIN unit.
It's a 6.2" touchscreen Radio (obviously), DVD, CD, SD Card and Bluetooth handsfree/streaming device - streaming from my iPhone is about as easy as it gets and the quality of DVD playback is surprisingly good, considering the price.
It also has a USB input for charging and the usual
Next model up also offers Sat Nav, but that isn't needed as I have that on my iPhone anyway (Tom Tom), so I settled for this unit as it had everything else I wanted/needed.
Would I recommend this unit? Yes I would. After a couple of weeks with it, I am suitably impressed with the quality, sound and vision, not to mention the fairly factory-look it gives as installed in the car.
I had reason to go to Volvo a couple of days ago and even their technician remarked on what a nice unit it was and how well it integrated into the vehicle.
If you're looking for something that will meet your everyday needs in a car stereo unit and are looking for something that's not going to be worth more than your car in a few years...I'd certainly give this a look over.
Similar units from Pioneer, Sony and Panasonic were upwards of $1000 for most of these features, but remember...price checking here and on pricespy is definitely worthwhile.
I would also recommend Radio Waves to anyone in the Auckland area looking for a good, friendly, professional and relatively inexpensive service.
