I got to drive a Holden Commodore Redline last year and it had it. It felt very overwhelming. I was not used to being presented with so much information. I suspect once you get used to it that it would be fine.

One of the Mazda 3 SP had this last year.

A number of years ago I suggested an inverse image option on Google Maps new features forum as this would allow me to rest the phone on dashboard band see the image reflected in the screen.

Got lots of +1s. But nothing changed.

Also tried the android HUD on my Nissan 4WD.
Didn't work so well on my laminated windscreen, as I got a reflection off the inside and outside layer of glass. The result was a blurry image, which did your eyes in trying to focus on.

This could reduce my chances of driving off the road. I realise that I spend way more time energy and concentration looking at the speedo than the road

I found I kept focusing on the "near" speedo on the windscreen HUD, instead of the "far" distance where vehicles were. I found I have to keep shifting my focus and found difficulty adjusting. mind you, you have to do this to look down at the speedo anyway. Just a matter of adjusting I guess.

I don't think it will though because with the car HUDs I've seen you still have to focus on the HUD so you are still taking your attention from the road ahead to the display.

It is not like a "proper" HUD where you can read it with your eyes focused in the distance. A "proper" HUD would probably cost more than the car, even a BMW unfortunately.

ok good to know it won't fix my problem! soundsl ike i need a V8 with wire throttle. just hold the pedal tehre and the speed is constant. with a 4 turbo and fly by wire ... the stupid computer drives the engine!

i wonder why cars don't have beeps to tell you when you are at your target speed, just over, a lot over, etc.

i remember once upon a time many Jap imports would have an annoying beep once over 100 clicks ... and there is no way to turn it off!!

Thanks for the input, guys. joker, my gps tells me when I am over the speed limit! Not so good when the gps speed limit data isn't correct!

But, yea, I was trying to avoid the downward looks and what that implies to concentrating on the road ahead. Take the point that there is still a focus adjustment.

Thanks for the TM link, hsvhel. Not a bad price if it works. Wonder who will buy one and tell us how it goes!

The laminated screens are a problem I've seen reported before. How can any system get around that, I wonder?

I guess it could work like the HUD in those Mazdas with it installed, which is a pop-up piece of perspex on which the information is reflected. (Don't BMW's HUD reflect onto the actual windscreen?). This method, however, would shift the necessary focal point to read the information even further away from the road, but I'd imagine it would be possible to design an aftermarket HUD that worked in a similar way.

I took a CX3 with a HUD installed for a drive the other week, and found it not too distracting; it's certainly less annoying than having to look down at the speedo (can't get worse than my old Primera which had the speedo in the middle of the cabin!). Surely having a HUD doesn't mean you look down more, but simply when you check it involves less head movement and potential distraction?
