As a new owner of a 4WD Diamante, I am trying to find some information about my car, which as usual came without an owner's manual. I have been able to discover only one site, in Australia, that has a forum for (the Australian version of) these vehicles. It is called The Australian Magna Club. To post questions I decided to register. When I clicked on the link, I was presented with a form asking for more than the usual amount of information, though most of the questions were not unreasonable. However, I balked when asked for my exact date of birth (after having already given my full name).

The site does allow the birth date info to be hidden from public view, but there is nothing that says why the information is required, or what it might be used for. Also no indication as to how secure storage of that information might be on the site.

I am generally pretty careful about protecting my privacy and also information that might be used for identity theft, such as my birth date. So should I answer this? Is it a reasonable thing to ask for? I would be interested to know what others think.

The Volvo forums also ask for this...I think it's a standard form used by many when signing up.

Put anything you like in there...it'll likely be verifying you're over 21 or some such.

Yep, a bit like those forms that require you to "enter a valid post code" (especially UK ones).  Well, there are a lot of valid post codes to choose from

It's a default question on many forums. Move along, nothing to see here. If you're truly paranoid then give them 01/01/70

This.

Part of it is to ensure you're of age to be on some forums.

I also don't like it when sites ask for more details than they need. Every time I order from Pizza Hut (for pickup), I'm asked whether I'd like to create an account. Creating an account requires providing a physical address... and it's validated against a database so even entering "pickup only" as the address doesn't work!

Yep - I was a member of that forum when I lived over there (and a highly awesome Magna). They're a good bunch and happy to share some valuable advice and experience.

Enjoy your Maggie!

I always put in the same fake birthdate.  So I remember what it is if asked to reset password etc, but isnt my real one to avoid identity theft.

I use false data if I don't like the site or just want something once but I try to be honest with those I intend to keep using, like GZ.

Blame meddling child protection laws that make sites not serve under 13s for this carryon. Just lie. Like whenever steam asks before showing something or if you want to look at a beer website etc.

Yeah I finally just registered with an arbitrary date. But they could just ask if I am over 18 or whatever. Other sites do that. They don't need to know my precise birth date. In this age of Internet identify fraud that doesn't exactly inspire confidence in the judgement of those behind the site.
