As a new owner of a 4WD Diamante, I am trying to find some information about my car, which as usual came without an owner's manual. I have been able to discover only one site, in Australia, that has a forum for (the Australian version of) these vehicles. It is called The Australian Magna Club. To post questions I decided to register. When I clicked on the link, I was presented with a form asking for more than the usual amount of information, though most of the questions were not unreasonable. However, I balked when asked for my exact date of birth (after having already given my full name).

The site does allow the birth date info to be hidden from public view, but there is nothing that says why the information is required, or what it might be used for. Also no indication as to how secure storage of that information might be on the site.

I am generally pretty careful about protecting my privacy and also information that might be used for identity theft, such as my birth date. So should I answer this? Is it a reasonable thing to ask for? I would be interested to know what others think.
