I would imagine the insurance company would have taken in some pretty hefty premiums up to this point so would mitigate a good portion of the cost, that said the hire company might be looking at a bit of an increase or even new insurers come renewal time :P

What a badly written article. The writer repeats three times (I stopped counting) the rental price, the driver's age but fail to say why did the accident happen, calling the driver "unlucky". That's bad reporting.

A few years ago an Aucklander crashed his shiny new Ferrari having decided to turn off the electronic traction control to find out what would happen. He found out within 10 minutes.
He famously offered half a Ferrari on Trade Me

What astonished me was the fact that someone cited as the 'co-owner' (of the Ferrari, we assume, but possibly the hire company) was aged 26...!

I dread to think what a UK insurer would charge a 26 year old for a car like that - but I suppose if you can afford the car you can afford the premium. The government also has a special tax called Insurance Premium Tax in the UK, so I expect the Revenue are sad too now..!

At a guess, Id say he was turning into a street and gave it too much gas. Any point in a car like that, where you dont have the wheel reasonably straight, its going to start to slide out soon as you apply the gas.

He should've stuck to hiring a Ford Focus....

Maybe give the guy the benefit of the doubt? Just because he was in the Ferrari and it was hired, that doesn't make it his mistake that caused it. The article, as MF said, is written poorly enough that it doesn't state the cause, though it does say there was a third car involved also. Perhaps THEY were to blame? Maybe they pulled out in front of the Ferrari, resulting in a glancing collision and the subsequent smash into the house and the taxi...?

You just don't know.

To get that under another car would require a certain amount of force, probably more force than should be exerted on an urban street

Many years ago my then manager wrote off a borrowed F355 Ferrari by fishtailing into the curb , getting airborne, landing on top of a car in carpark, bouncing and coming to rest on top of another car.

The insurance excess on this type of rental car is probably in the region of 5,000 pounds ($12,500).
