Looking at getting a Honda 500 side-by-side.
Anyone know whats required to make them street legal?

At the moment im just thinking of registering it for farm and beach use, but on occasion I have been known to go a bit further than i should with my quad bike when getting between farms. So if I get the honda 500, it would be nice to have it registered in a more flexible form if possible.

Edit: cant go too far since its electronically limited to 64 km/h

I'd ask your Honda dealer. I've never seen a Pioneer registered for the road. Maybe one of the old Big Red (MUV). A couple of Polaris and Can Am's I've seen. But I have a feeling there was some kind of law change recently that has made it much more difficult.

Nah a jimmy is too big for where I need to go. Good idea though but i need to go up some pretty dodgy tracks

Several beach tour operators here run JD Gators (side by side, 2 seat diesel 4x4) road registered, Vehicle Usage: Exempt Class B (EB), Body Style: Motorcycle.

They're fitted with standard turn signals, brake lights etc..

As mentioned above there've been some changes in Farm B regos recently. Got the letter from NZTA but can't remember what exactly right now.. Think it just involved our machinery capable of 40km/h or more now requiring COF/WOF's

Edit: So the category you really want might not exist. Looks like some are stretching the farm rego rules.

Done some more research, looks like as long as I get it registered (as exempt class B) then I can drive it on the road.
If i get a warrant of fitness, then I can drive above 30km/h

I am thinking of doing the 42 Traverse, but as its one-way, I need to be able to drive back around the park to the start again - which is about 40kms on-road.

I'll go to super cheap next week and see if i can find out whats involved in putting some indicators on it to add some safety, and run the on-road part in google street view to make sure there i can stay to the side or off the road most of the way round.

Are you only allowed to go one way through the 42nd traverse? I've been both ways through it, but that's more than 10yrs back. More fun to drive back up if you're up to it! A Jimny is 1.6m wide, what does your side by side measure at? There's not many places a Zook can't get with a decent set of rubber on it!

Its a pioneer 500 so its 1.2m wide.

It also turns out that all i needed to do is register it at the VTNZ testing centre and its road legal up to 40km/h
No WOF or anything like that.

But i'll be getting some indicator lights and a rotating amber lamp.

Looking at videos on youtube of the 42 traverse and it doesnt look like there are many passing points - so i dont want to encounter a large bighorn or isuzu coming the other way and not be able to pass them. It looks almost barely 1 lane wide in most parts.

Also been looking at other quad biking tracks and am wanting to do the Old Whangamomona Road this summer.
