Ever since getting my new scooter I've bee playing it safe and purchasing 'Castrol Power1 TTS Racing 2T Fully Synthetic' but I wonder whether I'm paying more for something that isn't actually giving me any material benefits or whether I'm better off just getting the bog standard 2 stroke oil from the local service station such as the Shell 2 stroke that comes in a yellow 1 litre container.

This might seem a bit obvious - but what does the manufacturer of your scooter recommend? It should be in the manual.

I see they offer an Oil Selector to help you choose the oil to use. I'd give it a try as well:

50cc scooter - going back and forths from work. No racing, just general transportation.

They don't give a recommended brand other than, "it needs to have these qualities".

Pretty sure you don't need full synthetic oil. The cheaper mineral 2T oil should be absolutely fine if it meets the specification given by the manufacturer.

Since you are burning it in a 2stroke I thought you were supposed to get the additive free 2stroke oil to minimize the bad smells from the additives burning. Doesnt seem to help in my old weedwhacker which stinks no matter what oil I use tho.

It smells of memories!

One thing to consider is that the fancy oils will often have different mix rates.

That will likely require tuning and possibly re-jetting to get the fuel mix right. Otherwise, you might risk poor performance and faster engine wear.

I would only use expensive two stroke oil on a high performance, much bigger engine. e.g. motocross bike, track bike or even maybe an old classic Kawasaki H1 or H2

If it is quite smoky, then synthetic may be better.

Synthetic oils, and in particular certain brands (Nulon is one) can smoke a lot less in two stroke engines.

If it runs on premix, the manufacturer may specify require a high fuel:oil ratio for a synthetic grade oil.

If it has a operate oil tank, then oil rate may be adjustable.
