I was in Christchurch for most of the week. I was staying at the Ibis in Hereford St.

It's a short walk from there to the Metro Bus Terminal a couple of short blocks down Colombo St. All major bus routes (and virtually all the minor ones, too) in Chch go through the main terminal.

The frequency of the main (Blue, Orange, Purple Yellow) routes looked to be very good through the day: about 10 mins apart.

The fares are zoned. I wasn't really paying attention to the pricing. Everything I was doing seems to be $2.50 on my the Metro Card ( I bought it for $10 at the main terminal after checking into my hotel).

The fares seems to be capped at $5 / day. That was cool.

Yesterday, when I went to the airport on the "29 Airport via Fendalton" bus, I had already used my $5 for the day going to / from work down Colombo St on the Blue line........so my ride to the airport - dropped at the front door - was no additional charge.

The cab fare is $50.

So my transport for the whole week - including the trip back to the airport (took taxi into the city on arrival) was $40 - including $10 to buy the card, which I can now use every time I go to Christchurch.

I was impressed. OK....the route info and bus stops aren't on Google Maps. but the Metroinfo.co.nz web site has a very useful trip planner that looks OK on a smartphone.

I could have rented a car and ended up with the usual parking hassles and I could see some serious traffic blockages as I moved around that the bus didn't have to worry about due to bus lanes.

I'd recommend anyone in Chch for a few days who is staying / working near / on the main roads / routes have a go at the public transport. It was cheap, convenient and reliable (for me - mileage obviously varies).

I am really not sure why they haven't added their data to Google maps, They already have the data set up in the GTFS format that could simply be submitted and it would work but they haven't. I wonder if its because of their contract with their current journey planner.

There are third party apps too, a really good one is Moovit, which does everything their journey planner does, but also guides you through it, EG it will alert you when its time to get off,

Charge is around $2.50 which lets you change bus's as much as you like for 2 hours. After 2 hours another $2.50 and can catch bus for rest of the day free.

If pay $5.00 each week day ($25 for week) then all weekend travel is free.

That's for zone one travel using metro card, which covers most of Christchurch.

I have a car that I use for work, but that's because I work some hours that bus's aren't operating, but other then that I find the Christchurch bus service great and use it when I go somewhere by myself.

I've always considered Christchurch's public transport network to be a step ahead of anywhere else in NZ. It was about 15 years ago when they launched the Metrocard and the original bus exchange, and both were seriously impressive at the time.

It's just a shame they didn't build enough capacity into the original bus exchange, but that doesn't matter any more for obvious reasons!

Due to the changes in December 2015, About half go through the city center / bus interchange while the rest are 'suburban links' which go between the suburbs, although they aren't hard to transfer to/from one of the major lines

What a refreshing post after reading so much negative rants in The Press.

Agreed, have been to meetings from the airport and back and found it to be fantastic.  One tip is that there is a premium payment from the airport to the city.  If you walk across the road to the first stop you do not pay that.  (Talking cash here as didnt have a metro card).
