Hey all,

So I am 'upgrading' my scooter (150cc PGO) to a bike, a new Triumph Street Triple 650 and I need some recommendations, for or against, in regards to insurance companies.  I have had a quick look online and prices range from $580 (kiwibike) to $1500, it seems there is a big discount for existing riders, which I seem to fit under, so would expect to be at the lower end of this price range.

What companies do the many geekzone riders use?

By the way, are any Auckland based bike owners on geekzone that do group rides?

I'm using NAC as I have my car insured with them so I can get some discount. Kiwibike also has a good reputation, easy to deal with when you get into any issues

I used to use NAC, then switched to Protecta when I bought a new scooter, as not only was Protecta significantly cheaper and policy also allowed cover to damage to motorcycle apparel. Excess on the new policy is $250 vs $800 under old policy. My premium for just under $10k of cover is $350.00. Mind you mine is a LAMS bike.

Btw I used to ride a PGO scooter too :)

Im a Ulysses member and in their latest magazine there was a full page add for AON who are apparently using NZI as their Underwriter.

I found their quote very competetive compared top Kiwibike so have gone to them to cover my new Can Am Spyder.

https://www.crombielockwood.co.nz/ Is the broker I use, they hunt out the best deals for whatever type of insurance it is you need.

Do any of these places do agreed value rather than market value?

I had a look at Protecta and did and online quote, and they offer agreed value insurance.  They also came out slightly cheaper at $530.  I also like the fact they offer insurance over gear, and can even insure you for track days!

"Agreed Value
Giving you confidence on what you will be paid if your motorcycle is stolen or written off.

"Track Day Cover
Your policy can be extended to cover use at approved Track Days (this requires written permission from Protecta, and a higher excess may apply for that day)."

I think I will go with them, best overall package with the bonus of the coverage of gear and agreed value.

I think it is often worth reading through the fine print and look at what actually is and isn't covered.

I've changed to Kiwibike. On a Yamaha Mt 07 its $44 a month as opposed to ami's $64. Also gear has better coverage. Really happy with the personal service as well.

I use Kiwibike - always fast communication, competitive pricing (I think I pay around $400 for my Speed Triple). They do track day cover, you have to submit the form on their website, and they will boost your excess. In my case my excess goes from $500 to $1,500, with a bunch of other conditions as well.

I think my underlying insurer is Protecta though I'm not 100% on that.

Never had to claim, so unsure how good they are in that respect.

Just to follow up on this, I got an email from KiwiBike yesterday as a follow up to my online quote, saying they had managed to get an even better rate for me!  Excellent customer service and good to see some proactive people around.

Now I just seem some fine, dry weather to be able to ride!

I had a similar experience with Kiwibike. They gave me a quote, which I was happy with and paid. Then a couple of days laters they emailed me to let me know they had found a better rate, and asked for my account details to refund the balance. Can't argue with that.
