Hi I was wondering if anyone knows if some roof boxes have less wind resistance/drag than others?

Needing to transport long things like skis and what nots ...

Some cheaper than others - wondering if anyone has experience

I've used these guys twice and they're awesome and Phil is very knowledgeable www.roofbox.co.nz The hapro ones are great and can open from either side which is surprisingly useful when it's packed to the gills

Just check as not all Hapro models open from both sides; ours doesn't but not a big concern for me. This brand came out as best value for money when I bought ours pre Xmas. I started a thread here on GZ so I suggest searching for that as there was some useful information provided by others.

Absolutely www.roofbox.co.nz. Had a Roady for my Caldina, changed the Caldina for a Prius, and was simply able to buy new Whisbars to attach the old Roady.  They were very helpful and easy to deal with.

And here's the earlier thread I mentioned (now I'm on a laptop, not iPad!)

Also would recommend roofbox.co.nz; I ended up buying both my Whisperbars and box s/h off TradeMe, but I spoke to Phil and he was patient and helpful.

Another vote for a Hapro from roofbox.co.nz. Great customer service.

Is your Whispbar flush or extended? How does the Hapro / Whispbar combo perform at 110ks? Or can I not do 110 anymore?

@graemeh does it matter how far back the roof box sits behind the top edge of the car in terms of wind noise (aka drag)?

THanks

Also got mine from Phil (just before Xmas).

We got the flush/ultra low profile Whispbar (S54) with the Traxer 6.6 Matte Black Roofbox.

The Traxer is VERY simple to put on and off (my wife and daughter have taken it off when I was away recently) and well worth the money.

Opening from both sides is a real benefit, but the simple mounting system would definitely be the reason I'd buy one again in the future.

PS With regards to positioning, because of the way the mounting system works, you can adjust the position (forward or back) easily to suit your vehicle.

Here's the Youtube video of how easy it is to mount:

I've got these ones http://www.whispbar.co.nz/products/11/rail-bar (Edit: these are also the S54 model as per the above post - designed for cars with pre-fitted side rails). No noise whatsoever when just these are on (I just leave them on all the time). When the box is on, there's a bit of noise, but we can only hear it when the sunroof cover is pulled back. In regards to any impact on the performance of the car - no issues. I've noticed no problems with balance or performance and can certainly do 110+ without issue! Fuel economy is hit a little bit - std fuel usage in our 6 without the box on is 5.4 l/100km on the open road, and this goes up to about 6.4l with the box on.
